- "The local authorities arrested him following an accusation that he was in fact the rebel Li Fuda (李福達), who in 1512 had led a White Lotus rebellion in Shaanxi province together with his uncle." Could you please explain what White Lotus is? Also, this sentence mentions Shaanxi province (two A's) and the previous one mentions Shanxi province (one A). If these are distinct provinces, please link Shaanxi province in this sentence.
- "One of Zhang's sons sought the assistance of Guo Xun, Marquis of Wuding, a close confidant of the Jiajing Emperor. Zhang had previously served in the marquis's household, supplying him with aphrodisiacs and providing his son as a male lover." Can you provide the name of Zhang's son if possible?
- "Two of Zhang's sons were arrested, after which Zhang himself surrendered to the authorities." Again, can we name Zhang's sons to prevent confusion about which sons did what? There is one more mention of the sons, "On Guo's advice, one of Zhang's sons..."
- "A wave of memorials then followed from the censors in both Beijing and Nanjing." Please state where the censors' memorials were sent. I believe they were sent to the Emperor.
- "Zhang Cong and Gui E (also supporters of the Emperor during the Great Rites) argued that most of the officials involved were not concerned with Zhang Yin himself, but rather sought to remove the Emperor's supporters from the former controversy." The sentence is somewhat unclear. Were Zhang Cong and Gui E arguing that the officials wished to remove their opponents from government service?
- "The Emperor responded by expelling Tang Shu from the official establishment." Again, was Tang removed from government service?
- "In September 1527, the Emperor placed the case in the hands of his trusted supporters Zhang Cong, Gui E, and Fang Xianfu, who were simultaneously appointed acting left censor-in-chief, acting minister of justice, and acting chief minister of the Court of Judicial Review, respectively." I notice that all three of these supporters were given titles of acting officials. Were these honorific appointments designed to show the Emperor's favor with these officials?
- "A new round of interrogations was conducted". Who conducted the interrogations, and who was interrogated? Presumably some officials or guards did the interrogation, and the subjects of interrogation were Zhang Yin and his supporters and/or rivals.
- "Ma was assigned to a garrison in an area afflicted by malaria." Did he survive after being sent to a malaria-infested region?
