Kylfingaland may have been used to refer to Karelia; on some runestones it has been interpreted as a synonymn for Garðariki, the Old Norse name for Russia,

Disambiguation tag

Is the al-Qazwini referred to here Zakariya al-Qazwini? He wrote an historical and geographical treatise in the 13th-century, but the dates don't match with those in the article. DrKay (talk) 13:21, 3 December 2011 (UTC)

I don't have access to either Holm 1987 or the original article by Briems, but here's what Benedikz, Benedict (1979-02-01). The Varangians of Byzantium. Cambridge ; New York: Cambridge University Press. p. 6. ISBN 978-0-521-21745-3. says:

One of the most notable older interpretations is that by B. Briem, ‘Kylfingar’, Acta Philologica Scandinavica, IV (1928), 40–8. Briem assumes that it is a Norse translation of the name of an obscure Finno-Ugrian tribe, the Vota (O. Russ. води, Finn. Vadjalaiset) because the vadja (Finn. vaaja) means Kylfa, ‘club’ in O.N.
