I have given a major update to the list, with loads of help by User:S7rugg1e. It hasn't been completely polished, mainly the English needs to be improved in a few places, mainly towards the end, but it is much more complete and informative than before. Move page

This page needs to be moved per WP:SAL#Naming conventions to something that starts with the words "list of" I recommend it be moved to List of winning techniques in sumo, unless someone thinks of a more concise name. List of kimarite should be avoided per WP:NAME#Use English words. Bradford44 16:48, 27 June 2007 (UTC)

I think the more English used the better. It would be made less concise, but maybe it should be called List of official winning techniques in sumo because the techniques are decided by the Japan Sumo Association rather than by convention or reporters or something like that.XinJeisan 17:04, 27 June 2007 (UTC)

It's not clear to me that this article constitutes a list per the intro to WP:SAL. It contains a considerable amount of explanatory text and can easily can stand by itself as an article. Compare List of named solar system objects, List of saints, List of basic philosophy topics, just to pick a few members of Category:Lists at random. Their primary purpose seems not to provide information as such, but to index other articles -- sorted, perhaps, along with some very basic facts, but not as the main references on their subjects as this one is. 非技, hiwaza and higi

Adding associated wrestlers for additional context

I have just added two examples of wrestlers known for using certain kimarite: Aonishiki for uchimuso and Terunofuji for kimedashi. Tsutaezori already has one with Ura.

I'd like to hear some thoughts on the idea and execution before I spend any time adding more. Do others agree that this is useful/interesting information? Civilbeard (talk) 18:22, 29 July 2026 (UTC)

I don't see a problem with adding wrestlers who are iconicly associated with kimarite; it would also be a good way to add depth to the article ; although we'll need to be careful not to get bogged down in details and to stay focused on the technique (and perhaps also its statistics).

For me, however, the biggest problem with the article remains its illustrations. There aren't images for all the techniques, and some images show the wrong techniques. Maybe we could find some old or free-of-use illustrations ? - OtharLuin (talk) 13:22, 31 July 2026 (UTC)

What about demonstrative photos by amateur sumo wrestlers? I wouldn’t be surprised if an amateur club would be willing to take a few photos showing various kimarite.Civilbeard (talk) 23:40, 31 July 2026 (UTC)

Photos from an amateur club would be the best solution yeah. Incidentally, that's also the solution I would have suggested to illustrate the article on Women's sumo. - OtharLuin (talk) 07:39, 1 August 2026 (UTC)

Additional citations

This article is marked as needing additional citations. The NHK "The Techniques of Sumo" section covers all 82 kimarite. Is there any reason not to cite it on each kimarite like has been done for the seven Basic Techniques? I could also attempt to find additional sources that give information on the kimarite, but the NHK's website strikes me as fairly definitive for purposes of basic definitions.
