Global vs American

@Btspurplegalaxy Groups are usually referred by their nationality IF it is easily defined. In the case of XG, it is a clear-cut Japanese group given that it comprises of Japanese members. However the situation is more complicated here given that half of the members are of other nationalities and the origin is split, given the course of the program, between agencies from United States and South Korea. In these cases, the descriptors "Global" or "Multinational" are used for precision (see Now United and Blackswan), yet the former is preferred for concision and its usage in the sources cited in the article (see [1] and [2]). If you are still aloof about the "Global" descriptor, consider the other prevalent descriptor for groups similar to Katseye. In the end, we just need to describe Katseye in a way that is objective and is in line with the sources used in the article, something that the current revision has failed to do. EdrianJustine (talk) 11:31, 14 June 2024 (UTC)

I prefer using the term "multinational" instead of "global." Btspurplegalaxy 💬 🖊️ 11:58, 14 June 2024 (UTC)
I agree with @EdrianJustine: DollysOnMyMind (talk) 14:55, 14 June 2024 (UTC)
I'm surprised to see you here, since I haven't noticed your contributions to the Katseye article before. I hope this isn't a case of WP:HOUNDING my edits. Btspurplegalaxy 💬 🖊️ 21:09, 14 June 2024 (UTC)
I boldly changed back the group's description per EdrianJustine's reasoning. 98𝚃𝙸𝙶𝙴𝚁𝙸𝚄𝚂[𝚃𝙰𝙻𝙺] 23:35, 14 June 2024 (UTC)
Don't rush into changing anything just yet. I would like to see what @Paper9oll: thinks on this matter. Btspurplegalaxy 💬 🖊️ 23:39, 14 June 2024 (UTC)
All reliable sources described the group as "global" and putting "American" in both sd and lead are misleading to the readers. There should be an inline citation to support the claim (MOS:LEADCITE) as none in the body of the article describe the group as an American but rather intended to promote in the American market. 98𝚃𝙸𝙶𝙴𝚁𝙸𝚄𝚂[𝚃𝙰𝙻𝙺] 00:19, 15 June 2024 (UTC)
There is no such thing as "global group", basically just a promotional and soapboxing gabbage and holds no real distinctive value to an encyclopedia article. I believe that WP:NATIONALITY is already clearcut on such as this is also a biography hence this guideline is applicable. Reading through the article, I could see that this group is originated in American (California to be more specify) however I couldn't find "the origin is split" where is this stated or was this a original research linking Hybe Corporation (based in South Korea) and Geffen Records (based in United States) together to form the term "global group" and/or "multinational"??? What is even more confusing reading through this discussion is since when we have such practice of using individual member's nationality and/or using the majority nationality among the members to defined the group's origin in the lead??? Hence not exactly sure, why was this an issue to begin with. Paper9oll (🔔📝) 07:05, 15 June 2024 (UTC)
I definitely don't agree with global. It just makes more logical sense to put American. The two other editors would prefer global. Btspurplegalaxy 💬 🖊️ 07:15, 15 June 2024 (UTC)
The practice that you find confusing is simply a result of going through the sources that were used in the article and the related Dream Academy article. Using "American" as a descriptor remains in conflict with the sources that refer to the group as being a "global", "multinational, or "international" group, given the various nationalities of the members. Those descriptors are not Wikipedia:SYNTHESIS, but are the most common words used to identify the group in media. Given that pertinent coverage does largely focus on the diversity of the group (i.e. the multinational nature of the members), MOS:NATIONALITY would agree that such descriptors would be appropriate and accurate. EdrianJustine (talk) 16:40, 18 June 2024 (UTC)
In case my earlier reply wasn't clear enough which I doubt so since @Btspurplegalaxy interpreted it correctly, I conclusively stated that "we [don't] have such practice [aka STATUS QUO] of using individual member's nationality and/or using the majority nationality among the members to defined the group's origin in the lead". The confusion doesn't lies with reading the sources and/or reading the related article which was already WP:BEFORE before replying earlier but rather questioning why on earth is this discussion going against the well established STATUS QUO i.e. defining x group based on y origin i.e. the nationality where the group was founded and/or where they started their career. By your logic, Twice is a "global" and/or "multinational" and/or "international" group also since "the diversity of the group" (i.e. the multinational nature of the members of South Korean, Japanese, and Taiwanese). Same for Blackpink and/or NewJeans. I also couldn't find where exactly NATIONALITY implied "that such descriptors would be appropriate and accurate". Lastly, just because Hybe and/or Geffen promoting and/or marketing them as "global" and/or "multinational" and/or "international" group and that the media simply doing "stenographic reporting" and/or "press release journalism" and/or "parrot journalism" does not guarantee inclusion just because it is verifiable. I remain firm in my position not to agree to disagree on the use of promotional and/or marketing terminology, as I have clearly stated. However, I am open to exploring other solutions under the condition that the existing term "American girl group" is retained and any proposed solutions must not involve promotional and/or marketing language, regardless of intent, however a slight leeway for promotional and/or marketing language is allowed if the solutions involves quoting. Paper9oll (🔔📝) 17:45, 18 June 2024 (UTC)
Is the consensus still “American”? Nearly every source and article I see calls KATSEYE a global/multinational group. I feel there’s no harm in saying it and using a new term. The group allows a new age for groups, which would allow for “multinational” being used as its descriptor. I also feel it isn’t “marketing garbage” because its descriptor makes sense: “global girl group” is a newly coined term, so “global girl group based in Los Angeles” would make sense, in my opinion, especially with its based area “Los Angeles” would add more clarity. 2607:FEA8:4EC0:2D00:178:5CB4:1AEA:5A48 (talk) 15:43, 4 August 2024 (UTC)
I also have the same questioning, especially considering how Now United and Blackswan both have "global" and "multinational" descriptors in their articles, as per what @EdrianJustine pointed. Warmtoned (talk) 16:24, 4 August 2024 (UTC)
With renewed attention to this issue, I do think that the status quo is problematic and will continue to cause conflict as Katseye continues to receive media coverage. No matter what route is taken, the existing term "American girl group" will come across as misleading as most sources indicate a lack of a collective nationality. It contradicts with MOS:NATIONALITY as in this case, they are largely, if not entirely, notable for their varied nationalities as a collective, more so than their country of origin. Or in other words, the lack of a collective nationality is highly relevant to the subject's notability, unlike in the case in the groups that were previously mentioned.
The problem here lies more on the existing term rather than what term should be used. I do believe that if "global" or the like would be deemed unacceptable, then no term may be accepted, as in the current case in Anya Taylor-Joy, which is also a case of multiple nationalities conflicting with each other, though in a different but somewhat similar context. An acceptable, noncontroversial compromise would be:
Katseye (stylized in all caps) is a girl group based in Los Angeles, California. The group consists of six members: Manon, Sophia, Daniela, Lara, Megan, and Yoonchae. Described as a "global girl group", the sextet was formed through the reality show Dream Academy, a collaboration between Hybe Corporation and Geffen Records. The group debuted in 2024 with the single "Debut", which will be followed by the extended play SIS (Soft Is Strong), set to release August 16, 2024.
EdrianJustine (talk) 18:51, 4 August 2024 (UTC)
I back this compromise up! It's a true-to-self descriptor of what the group is, without conflicting other ideas of what they are. Waiting for what others say. Warmtoned (talk) 21:16, 4 August 2024 (UTC)
I'm happy to support this proposal, as the first sentence avoids introducing promotional content and aligns with nationality guidelines and the existing status quo. I am NOT open to "agreeing to disagree" on any other proposal that deviates from the criteria mentioned in preceding sentence and earlier comments, including but limited to those related to promotional content and nationality guidelines. Any picture that can be used in the lead?

Although I have uploaded the public domain logos, it still would not make any sense to put that there. The creative commons photo also kept being removed by people who disagreed on me putting a photo of only five members when there's six. Hopefully once the album is out and they go on more interviews we cpild get a photo of all six members but for now if you happen to have a photo of Katseye you have taken yourself please do upload it. Lara Raj or Lara Rajagopalan or Lara ‘Raj’ Rajagopalan?

I found an article on Cosmopolitan with all of the girls full names but the author called Lara by her full surname. I know that on the documentary Lara was credited as Lara Raj not Lara Rajagopalan. Can find a source citing what Lara's preferred name is?

What is everyone's opinion on this? DSQ (talk) 12:01, 12 September 2024 (UTC)

It doesnt really matter since Lara Raj is just a shortened version of her actual name. This0k (talk) 02:02, 14 September 2024 (UTC)

Article for Pop Star Academy.

Pop Star Academy:Katseye is very notable and brought mass attention to the group. As cited by Time, Rolling Stone,Marie Clarie, and Billboard. There is actually a draft that needs work here. If anyone will be willing to fix up this draft by this user and submit it then that would be great or even just create your own, thanks in advance. This0k (talk) 17:05, 21 September 2024 (UTC)

Members Surnames

Is there a particular reason why this page doesn't have any of the members surnames and why it has been removed when I added them with a source? DSQ (talk) 05:12, 13 September 2024 (UTC)

We use the names the members go by professionally, as listed on their official website. The group does not use their full names, only their first names, which is why the full names are not included. Btspurplegalaxy 💬 🖊️ 05:20, 13 September 2024 (UTC)
Almost all of them list their full names on their social media, with the exception of Lara. Also it is standard practice on Wikipedia to not only list stage names but legal names as well. Which is why on articles like Lady Gaga's and Chappell Roan's (someone who has stated they don't wish to be referred to by their legal name) they both have their full names in the headers. I'm not sure why Katseye should be any different? They have not hidden their name deliberately like Banksy. DSQ (talk) 08:57, 13 September 2024 (UTC)
The formatting of Kateseye articles follows a style of K-pop articles, where full names are typically not included. Btspurplegalaxy 💬 🖊️ 09:33, 13 September 2024 (UTC)
I thought as per the above talk "Global or American" this was not a K-pop group but, as the header says, an LA based girl group? Should the K-pop article standard really apply? Especially, as I said most of the members have their full names on their social media so presumably wish to be known by those names?
Wikipedia is supposed to give as much information as possible and it has failed if users have to go back to google to find out the members surnames in my opinion. DSQ (talk) 10:27, 13 September 2024 (UTC)
They are connected to K-pop. They are signed to a Korean label, and they promote in South Korea. Btspurplegalaxy 💬 🖊️ 10:33, 13 September 2024 (UTC)
They are also signed to an American label. Anyway I'm sure this will come up again but I'm willing to admit defeat on point. DSQ (talk) 12:45, 13 September 2024 (UTC)
If it's their individual BLP article, then this "to not only list stage names but legal names as well" would apply however this is the group's article in which as Btspurplegalaxy has mentioned and also as per the hidden note, the group's official website listed their first name not their full legal name and/or full non-legal stage name. Paper9oll (🔔📝) 10:58, 13 September 2024 (UTC)
Let's just keep the surnames because it WILL keep continously getting added and I'm not sure if that would fall under vandalism because majority of the members are not Korean, plus they are also under Geffen not just HYBE UMG. Please let me know what you think of this.

We can always add a note, refraining people from adding the full names. Btspurplegalaxy 💬 🖊️ 02:56, 22 September 2024 (UTC)
I feel like if surnames aren't gonna be added, the Korean translation of their names should also be put there. Feel free to let me know how you feel about that decision. This0k (talk) 03:04, 22 September 2024 (UTC)
Updated the note to denote WP:DISRUPTIVE EDITING. For long-term vandalism and/or disruptive editing, request for protection at WP:RPPI. For continuous vandalism and/or disruptive editing, warn the user sufficiently (level 1 to 4) and report to WP:AIV. Personally, I have no objection to their Korean stage name (minus their surname) from being included in the Members section as they are also performing in Music programs of South Korea, however accuracy (no loose translation or literal translation) must be ensured as we're dealing with WP:BLP's names here. In addition, if they're introducing themselves and/or being introduced by their English name, then I don't see why we should be including their Korean stage name. Can you WP:BURDEN some evidence in this discussion on whether they're introducing themselves and/or being introduced by their Korean stage name when performing in South Korea's music programs? Paper9oll (🔔📝) 08:11, 22 September 2024 (UTC)
I agree with your assessment but I'm not willing to fight my corner on this point. If the users who are doing most of the work on this page wish to keep deleting the members surnames then that's okay. I don't see their point of view even if I disagree with it.
I will say I think adding a warning for disruptive editing might be futile as I think a Wikipedia might not necessarily agree with that keeping their surnames off the page is best practice. Especially since the members don't yet merit having their own individual pages and it is causing user to return to search engines to get the information they want.
I think a compromise could be to mention that the members go by stage names as part of their work but then also mentioning their full legal names at least once on the page. DSQ (talk) 11:07, 26 September 2024 (UTC)
"mentioning their full legal names at least once on the page", already there at Pre-debut activities and formation section. Paper9oll (🔔📝) 11:27, 26 September 2024 (UTC)
True but I think that that isn't highly visible for your average Wikipedia user show is looking them up. I really do think that either the info box or the members section should be where their surnames are mentioned.
Oblivious users trying to be helpful who aren't aware of the K-pop Wikipedia standards (especially because the group don't describe themselves as being a K-pop group) will probably keep trying to edit their surnames in. Unless the page is locked I think this will be an ongoing issue and understandably so because leaving their surnames out, in my opinion, doesn't add to the article in any way but in fact detracts from it.
DSQ (talk) 11:40, 26 September 2024 (UTC)
So far, to date, after me reverting you which spawn this discussion, there has only been 1 occurrence of such after which, hence it isn't very common disruptive editing that is happening. The note was updated to a stronger tone for preventive measures, and me replying what further actions to take is for guiding purposes. To conclude, my stand remains the same as I had replied initially above and I don't see why it isn't already more than sufficient in prose form in the History section when a BEFORE check and the combination of "Katseye [stage name]" and/or "[stage name] Katseye" shows it's WP:COMMONNAME compared to their full legal name. Paper9oll (🔔📝) 12:11, 26 September 2024 (UTC)
I'm curious as to why KATSEYE Weverse uses their full name, including "Rajagopalan" for Lara's surname instead of "Raj."
If it's their official stagename, wouldn't that include using the stage names consistently through all Social Media, Official Merchandise and Official Formatting? Maybe including their full names isn't exactly a bad idea because of the inconsistency in stage naming. 2607:FEA8:1D64:2900:DC49:BD38:2E76:42CD (talk) 21:12, 9 October 2024 (UTC)

Other than Manon Bannerman (who goes by her first and middle name) every member uses their full name on social media. I believe it is time to add their surnames to the info box and member section to bring them into line with other American based pop groups.

Has there been a change of consensus on this? DSQ (talk) 17:39, 12 September 2025 (UTC)

Add Kpop to genres with Pop.

I follow K-pop (and therefore Katseye) closely and Katseye is consistently presented and understood within that space rather than as a standard Western pop group.

They were created and managed by HYBE, use the idol training system, promote through K-pop media and performance formats, and are discussed by fans and press in direct continuity with K-pop acts even though their music is primarily in English.

Language has never been a deciding factor for K-pop classification! And many English releases by K-pop groups are still categorised as such.

Listing Katseye as pop only feels incomplete and does NOT reflect how the group actually exists and is framed within the industry. ~2025-40521-22 (talk) 15:59, 13 December 2025 (UTC)

I agree, and have added it with a source. Day Creature (talk) 14:34, 23 December 2025 (UTC)
Your source does not definitively name them K-pop, it highlights both reasons to and to not call them K-pop.
There are quotes like “KATSEYE does not explicitly define itself as a K-pop group.” and the emphasis on balance in showing that some U.S. outlets (CBS) are quoted calling them “modeled after K-pop stars", while ther outlets (CNN) quoted doing the opposite and avoiding the K-pop label. It also quotes music critics/experts, with one, Lim Jin-mo, saying “strictly speaking, they are not a K-pop group." Except, these are all reported labels and not the article’s own conclusion. Warmtoned 🕯 talk! 17:27, 23 January 2026 (UTC)
It's a bit of a silly debate, since the people who don't label them K-pop seem to base this mostly on the fact that some of the group's members are not Korean. Music genres aren't based on what country the musicians were born in. I chose the Chosun Daily source because it provides a good overview, but we could instead cite any of the multiple reliable sources that have described their genre as K-pop. Day Creature (talk) 18:05, 23 January 2026 (UTC)
I'd definitely agree that the article would be enhanced if they were listed as Kpop; the type of music they produce, their branding, performances all align with norms for the industry.
However, I'd want to avoid misinforming people about their origin. Perhaps we include a footnote saying something like "Although the group was developed using KPop training methods, Katseye is not based in Korea." HemlockLeaf (talk) 13:39, 29 January 2026 (UTC)

KATSEYE is a true global group, and they proudly support every member’s culture.

The members come from different parts of the world — Daniela (USA/Cuba/Venezuela), Lara (USA/India), Manon (Switzerland/Ghana), Megan (USA/China), Sophia (Philippines), and Yoonchae (South Korea). Instead of hiding their differences, they celebrate them.

They share their languages, traditions, and backgrounds with each other and with fans, showing that diversity is their strength. KATSEYE proves that you can come from completely different cultures and still stand strong as one team.

Not done. We can wait until it is actually released. Binksternet (talk) 20:21, 31 March 2026 (UTC)
Binksternet (talk · contribs) But why? A reliable source has been cited and the single is clearly being promoted. ~2026-13653-92 (talk) 20:36, 31 March 2026 (UTC)
Certainly WP:INDISCRIMINATE is at play here. Wikipedia has a general problem of hosting ephemeral announcements even after the main event has happened, for instance the announcement of a famous person's pregnancy is too often kept after the child is born. Such announcements are unimportant after the event has happened. The essay WP:Recentism recommends that we emphasize "information that will remain notable over time" rather than ephemeral stuff. Once Katseye has a new single released then we have something that is "notable over time". Binksternet (talk) 22:50, 31 March 2026 (UTC)

Monster high

I don’t know when this was made but seeing other comments made this year I’ll just say it. If this post was made around this year you have forgotten to add Monster high to their collaborations. ~2026-23134-64 (talk) 23:16, 14 April 2026 (UTC)

It's listed under promo singles. CAMERAwMUSTACHE (talk) 15:22, 15 April 2026 (UTC)

Page for all members

Someone should make a separate page for all the members, but I don't know how 174.4.93.77 (talk) 08:33, 7 August 2025 (UTC)

The members would each have to have their own biography page. So far, only Daniela has one, but this will change once people write articles for the other girls 🌷Reverosie🌷★talk★ 22:43, 21 August 2025 (UTC)
Given the group as a whole and individual members’ massive rise, individual pages for each of the members of Katseye must be a creation priority for Wikipedia Pop music/K-pop/Women in Music editors. They are each some of the biggest figures in pop at the moment with the highest levels of notability amongst new artists, and are frequently written about as individuals and as a group. As with this page, we should expect high viewership for these articles from the start. Quite shocking they don’t exist yet outside of Daniela’s. This alone gives Daniela quite disproportionate Wikipedia’s coverage, even though on various metrics, she is not even the most notable of the group, only the first to get the full write up treatment. Please editors, let’s spend some time to build out those individual articles ASAP! 2A02:8109:9E26:AD00:C1BF:B4C6:69FF:4458 (talk) 10:31, 2 September 2025 (UTC)
I made an article for Lara Rajagopalan (Lara Raj), but I couldn't use her stage name because it's already taken by this article. Someone more tech savvy than me please transfer it asap. Wisenerd (talk) 19:30, 9 September 2025 (UTC)
@Wisenerd There are already several drafts for an article for Lara Raj. The article has not been published in the mainspace due to notability issues. I recommend you merge any relevant content from your draft Draft:Lara Rajagopalan (2) to Draft:Lara Raj, but please be careful as I noticed at least one error in your draft (both of Lara's parents are not Indian). Feel free to reach out if you have any questions.
For anyone else suggesting the other members should have their own pages, please do it yourself instead of telling others what to do:
Contribute to the drafts. Please do not attempt to publish them to article space, especially if they have not greatly improved since last receiving comments at AfC. It is not guaranteed that any individual member will have a published Wikipedia page. Please review notability guidelines. It is common that not all members of a group have an individual Wikipedia page. Wracking  talk! 21:15, 9 September 2025 (UTC)
It seems like Lara's father is in fact Indian, based on social media posts.

@Wisenerd Hi there, there is already an active article for Yoonchae, linked here. However, the article has been nominated for deletion by editors. I suggest improving it before creating a whole new article draft, lest your article get deleted also. I'm pretty sure she is notable enough, her page just has sourcing/citation issues. Thank you. I've helped submission and refinement for the pages of Megan and Manon. They have both been accepted in these last two days. This means that Yoonchae is the only one remaining! 21mis (talk) 11:54, 16 April 2026 (UTC)

Awards & nominations

At what stage does a standalone page about Katseye's awards and nominations become acceptable? IsaacMDB23 (talk) 19:45, 21 April 2026 (UTC)

And same question about live performances. IsaacMDB23 (talk) 10:31, 22 April 2026 (UTC)
I think the live performances could be split off soon, but the awards section isn't taking up too much space to impede navigability just yet. orangesclub 🍊 11:15, 22 April 2026 (UTC)
Okay, thank you! IsaacMDB23 (talk) 11:19, 22 April 2026 (UTC)
