Kamae applies to more than just karate. It also refers to the positions taken in the traditional Japanese Martial Arts of Iaijutsu, Naginata-jutsu, Sojutsu, etc. Also, kamae has sometimes been called gamae such as in the art of Kendo where all positions are called "kamae", except for the position of "waki".

I might add kenjutsu as well.
The pronunciation, BTW, of "gamae" depends on the word's placement after another word.
