Hi, thank you for patrolling. "The placement of hyphens varies depending on the value of the ISBN." The segments are not consistent fixed-length, they are variable length. I have been making them consistently correct with the proper placement, determined by the allocation of the International ISBN Agency. The proper hyphenation placement can be found using the search at https://grp.isbn-international.org or the derived tools such as https://www.isbn.org/ISBN_converter Cam1170 (talk) 20:32, 19 June 2026 (UTC)

As far as I've gathered, it is best to be consistent with either hyphenating ISBNs or not hyphenating ISBNs in a given section or article, which I have been following. I have been editing articles which already had ISBNs but were using the hyphens in incorrect places. Is there an editors forum to seek input about this stylistic convention? Help talk:ISBN would probably be a good start... I'm willing to be wrong, but from where I'm standing the ISBNs at Justin Gregg are formatted correctly. I see you have now removed the hyphenation altogether from Justin Gregg. This seems a bit backhanded, but I'm just going to leave it for now because this is a silly thing to argue over. Sorry, that may not have been the polite way to do it. The best way I see to gain input from other editors is by referring to editor-written documentation. In Template:Infobox book: "The rules for hyphenating an ISBN are complex (currently 29 pages). Do not add spaces or hyphens to an unformatted ISBN which are likely to be wrong if you are guessing." ISBNs should not be hyphenated incorrectly. There is plenty of guidance on Wikipedia:ISBN on how to hyphenate them properly using registration data, which indicates that the consensus of editors has decided that’s how it should be done. This conversation should probably be moved back to your talk. On HoloX Meeting, which is about a Japanese manga, the publisher of it in Japanese published it with one set of hyphens, and then the publisher of the English translation did not use hyphens. For consistency, I copied down the ISBN and its hyphens used in the Japanese version and mirrored it to the English ISBN. You have now changed only the English translation's ISBN to use different hyphens, making the article inconsistent. 1brianm7 (talk) 20:28, 24 June 2026 (UTC)
