Grid refs

[edit]

The grid ref is shown as SD7348014386, which is to one metre accuracy: unless the reservoir is no bigger than my neighbour's garden pond, this is way too precise - too many digits could confuse the average reader. Last time that I visited the reservoir it was about 1 km from northern end to southern, and about 400 m wide. I would therefore suggest SD735144 as good enough for Wikipedia purposes; it marks the centre to 100 m accuracy. --Redrose64 (talk) 12:14, 7 February 2010 (UTC)Reply

Okay, fine. I just copied the grid reference from the ordinance survey website. If you've not changed it then I'll change it now. Thanks for the info. •• Fly by Night (talk) 12:38, 7 February 2010 (UTC) —Preceding unsigned comment added by Fly by Night (talkcontribs) Reply
I've removed the non-breaking spaces: these are not required as part of a grid ref, and more importantly, they confuse the code which creates the external links to maps. Try clicking on this SD 735 144 and then a map in that; then try the same with this SD735144; I worked out there is 42 kilometres (26 mi) difference. --Redrose64 (talk) 14:14, 7 February 2010 (UTC)Reply

Infobox matters

[edit]
(copied from Template talk:Infobox UK place#Bolding of the Place Name by Redrose64 (talk) 19:31, 7 February 2010 (UTC))Reply

It's a reservoir article; it should be using {{Infobox lake}}, whilst also, Lancashire is not a metropolitan county, and the Metropolitan Borough of Bolton is in Greater Manchester... WP:UCC and all... --Jza84 |  Talk  18:31, 7 February 2010 (UTC)Reply

(end of copied bit)
The current Bolton/Blackburn boundary passes smack through the middle of the lake, as did the 1974-1986 Greater Manchester/Lancashire boundary. So it's kind of in both really: and as such, I put both banners on the talk page.
The infobox issue is still outstanding though. --Redrose64 (talk) 19:31, 7 February 2010 (UTC)Reply
Whoops, didn't spot that Jza84 had already swapped the infobox. --Redrose64 (talk) 19:35, 7 February 2010 (UTC)Reply
