Birth name "Suter" ?

I see this came up back in 2006: some sources, including at least one used in the current article, say his birth name was "Suter". I've found this variant spelling in other places inside and outside of Wikipedia, as well, and it took me a while to catch on that "John Suter" was in fact "the" John Sutter.

The 2006 discussion was very brief, which I'll summarize as resolving to "nuh uh". But since there are sources for this, I'd think at least a mention of the variant would be in order. (There's also an existing article on famed poodle-musher John Suter that perhaps should have a disambiguating hatnote. Maybe that's all that's needed?)
