Jerusalem is a former featured article. Please see the links under Article milestones below for its original nomination page (for older articles, check the nomination archive) and why it was removed.
In May/June 2013, there was a Wikipedia:Requests for comment/Jerusalem about the lead section of this article. This discussion was mandated by the Arbitration Committee, and its result remained binding for three years (until January 2016). While the binding results of this RfC have now expired, this page is subject to the following page-level sanction: As the results of Wikipedia:Requests for comment/Jerusalem regarding the article's lead represent the community's consensus at a well-attended discussion, a new request for comments must be undertaken and reach consensus prior to any changes being made to the article's lead section. Editors editing the lead without consensus from an RfC are subject to sanctions such as page or topic bans or being blocked from editing. Reverts of blatant and obvious vandalism or edits made in violation of this sanction are exempt from this restriction.

Ella Kenan (January 16, 2026). "Loss of values: Wikipedia as global arena for knowledge poisoning, especially about Israel". Ynet. Retrieved January 17, 2026. There are many other troubling examples. Jerusalem, Israel's capital, is not defined on English Wikipedia as a city in any country, but as a city in the "southwestern Levant." Even after Wales' personal intervention, the biased definition returned.

The Jewish injunction to pray toward Jerusalem comes in the Orach Chayim section of Shulchan Aruch (94:1)—"When one rises to pray anywhere in the Diaspora, he should face towards the Land of Israel, directing himself also toward Jerusalem, the Temple, and the Holy of Holies."[citation needed]

Just a quick suggestion: as the second paragraph of the lead is mostly dedicated to relatively recent history and the third and fourth paragraphs to much earlier history, might it be beneficial to move the second paragraph to the end of the lead to make it roughly chronological? I think it might improve flow of the article if readers were to read about ancient history and then modern history, rather than reading about modern history and then snapping back thousands of years.
