Red wingtips discrepancy
[edit]The lead currently reads that it has the red wingtips that give the bird its name, but then the article later states that it lacks these wingtips, so does it actually have the waxy wingtips? Lampyscales (🐍) 16:12, 31 May 2024 (UTC)
- @Lampyscales it often doesn't have them, but they are present in some birds; I've edited to correct this. A new better quality taxobox pic I've added shows a bird with the red tips. I suspect they are present in adults, but absent in immature (first-winter) birds (Cedar Waxwing is similar; and they are fewer, but not usually absent, in immature Bohemian Waxwing too); I've not (yet) found a suitable reference for this conjecture so haven't added it (yet!). - MPF (talk) 02:09, 14 February 2025 (UTC)
- Another better pic (unfortunately not with a Commons-compatible license!) showing a bird with red tips here - MPF (talk) 02:15, 14 February 2025 (UTC)
- And a reference for age & sex identification located (van Oijen, M. J. P.; Roselaar, C. S. 2007) and cited, more details to follow - MPF (talk) 01:37, 17 February 2025 (UTC)
- Very nice. I wasn't expecting this to ever get an answer lol - I noticed the wingtips thing when I was looking at waxwings one afternoon and clicking through links. I haven't gotten around to learning on how to cite things yet, so it's good to see a resolution. Lampyscales (🐍 | C) 20:48, 24 February 2025 (UTC)
- Thanks! It was certainly an interesting one to follow up! - MPF (talk) 22:01, 24 February 2025 (UTC)
