ISBN for 'Before and After Childbirth' book

[edit]

I found a possible ISBN for Before and After Childbirth: Ante-Natal and Postnatal Exercises: |isbn=9780443003332 (1958, according to https://www.amazon.com/Before-After-Childbirth-Jane-Madders/dp/0443003335) but this doesn't seem to correspond to any real books according to the five isbn searches I've tried. Yadsalohcin (talk) 15:21, 29 May 2025 (UTC)Reply

@Yadsalohcin: Thanks for trying! I suspect the book was published too early to have been integrated into the ISBN system (I don't think it was ever republished again after the 1950s). Alanna the Brave (talk) 23:03, 24 June 2025 (UTC)Reply

Shall review @Alanna the Brave, on a first glance this looks very good. A bit of a breath of fresh air after my recent reviews IAWW (talk) 00:01, 18 August 2025 (UTC)Reply

I noticed you haven't been active for about a week or so, which is no problem, but I would like to confirm you will be available to respond to improvements before I continue. IAWW (talk) 16:38, 19 August 2025 (UTC)Reply
Hello @IAWW -- I've been away on vacation, but am home today. I should have availability this weekend to respond to review comments. Best, Alanna the Brave (talk) 22:32, 20 August 2025 (UTC)Reply
@It is a wonderful world: Do you still have capacity to complete this review? I can respond to your initial comments from Aug. 18 if that's everything major, but I'm not sure if you were planning to say more about the article first. Thanks, Alanna the Brave (talk) 15:48, 26 September 2025 (UTC)Reply
Hi Alanna, I'm sorry I completely forgot about this. I will review ASAP. Thanks for your patience. IAWW (talk) 13:33, 28 September 2025 (UTC)Reply

@It is a wonderful world: So sorry! It turned into a somewhat hectic month. My slate is totally clear tomorrow morning, so I will sit down and get this done for certain. Thanks for your patience, Alanna the Brave (talk) 22:59, 17 October 2025 (UTC)Reply
No worries, I'm not really in any rush. I hope it all went well. IAWW (talk) 07:16, 18 October 2025 (UTC)Reply

Lead

[edit]

it was considered: As noted in the review of the body, is this meant to be "is considered"? IAWW (talk) 17:02, 29 September 2025 (UTC)Reply

Fixed -- I followed the source trail for more clarification, and the claim seems mainly to have come from Madders herself. -A.

Rest of the lead looks good. I think you summarised the article really well.

Education

Looks good :)

Career

[edit]

Grantly Dick-Reed and encountering his work in support of natural childbirth, Madders was inspired to offer relaxation training to pregnant women: How did his work specifically inspire Madders? IAWW (talk) 01:01, 18 August 2025 (UTC)Reply

There isn't a ton of detail in the sources, but I've adjusted/expanded that paragraph slightly. -A.

She was the introducer of the regular Women's Hour programme serving the Midlands, and contributed items to the English Magazine programme for overseas listeners: WP:CINS error IAWW (talk) 17:02, 29 September 2025 (UTC)Reply

Fixed. -A.

The women held regular group discussions about family relationships and parenthood, and sometimes brought in guest lecturers such as doctors, teachers, and educational psychologists: Another CINS error. I'll fix any further ones myself. IAWW (talk) 17:02, 29 September 2025 (UTC)Reply

Fixed. -A.

The Family Club was thought to be the earliest formal children's play group in the United Kingdom: Do you mean "is thought"? Also, by whom? IAWW (talk) 17:02, 29 September 2025 (UTC)Reply

Clarified -- it's a claim that came from Madders. -A.

She spent six years conducting research for a study on migraines. Working with a family doctor named K. M. Hay, she provided relaxation therapy...: Is the second sentence the "research" referred to in the first sentence? If so, this should be clearer. IAWW (talk) 17:02, 29 September 2025 (UTC)Reply

I wasn't totally sure myself, but I read through more of the published study, which confirms yes -- I've expanded/clarified that paragraph and cited the study. -A.

she reported in 1971 that 69 of their patients had demonstrated improvement by experiencing fewer or milder cases of migraines after the treatment: Was there any further commentary/research on whether this was significantly more than would be expected with a placebo treatment? IAWW (talk) 17:02, 29 September 2025 (UTC)Reply

No, I haven't found any further commentary on that. -A.

Personal life

Death and legacy

[edit]

Is "history of therapeutic relaxation in the United Kingdom" notable enough for a redlink? IAWW (talk) 17:02, 29 September 2025 (UTC)Reply

Seems a little niche to me, but it's true that there seems to be a number of sources/information available on the subject, so somebody might be able to create that article. I've redlinked. -A.

[11]: Extreme nitpick: "managing" is slightly different from being in change of, and the source only supports the latter. IAWW (talk) 01:01, 18 August 2025 (UTC)Reply

Removed "managing". -A.

[12]: Doesn't support that it was "for helping students and parents navigate..." IAWW (talk) 01:01, 18 August 2025 (UTC)Reply

I've removed "parents" and added the "Family Life Starts in the Classroom" source, which does support the claim for the course teaching teachers to help students navigate these issues. -A.

[13]: The actual teaching took place at the Birmingham College of Education, not the Migraine Clinic. IAWW (talk) 01:01, 18 August 2025 (UTC)Reply

Corrected to explain the patients were referred to her by the clinic. -A.

Hook: Hook has been verified by provided inline citation
    QPQ: Done.

Overall: Needs its QPQ, as you've noted, ping me when it's done. I was curious that there's no information in the article about her life before college but I assume you have worked with the information available. Anyway - hook fact is supported, and as I'd never even heard of a relaxation charity I find it interesting. DrThneed (talk) 02:46, 1 November 2025 (UTC) @Alanna the Brave: review above, please add a QPQ. DrThneed (talk) 01:07, 7 November 2025 (UTC)Reply

@Alanna the Brave: Great, thanks - no need to apologise, I had just realised I didn't ping you when I reviewed it so you probably wouldn't realise it was done. Sorry! Changed the status, all good to go with this. DrThneed (talk) 02:17, 7 November 2025 (UTC)Reply
