“Mansa Musa map”

[edit]

I’m kind of skeptical the claim that the 1525 map was dedicated to Mansa Musa. The map shows a nameless “ruler of Guinea” on the lower left who is holding gold. The British Library talks about the map and doesn’t mention it was dedicated to anyone

I don’t plan on editing the article and maybe it was dedicated to Mansa Musa but the claim comes from Early Modern Constructions of Europe book cited in the wiki article. The map is pretty creative and doesn’t seem to show any actual Mali empire but shows a gold trade

If no source outside the 2016 book says the map was dedicated to Mansa Musa then my opinion is the book’s claim is false. I’m not claiming the map doesn’t depict a Sub-Saharan gold trading empire but its happening at the edge of the known universe and doesn’t seem to be dedicated to it

I made a post on Mansa Musa’s talk page
