Title Capitalization
[edit]We may want to consider moving the title to "JPEGMafia," however inelegant. I know the MoS specifies (somewhere—I can't locate it presently) that titles should only be all caps when referring to an acronym (see the countless attempts to move MF Doom to "MF DOOM"). JPEGMAFIA is more complicated, admittedly, as the JPEG portion is an acronym. Is it actually in accordance with the MoS to fully capitalize the non-acronym portion of a name formed from an original acronym? anthologetes (talk • contribs) 17:36, 17 March 2019 (UTC)
- Hey, I’ve finished a German-language article about him and decided to capitalize the title. That’s how nearly all websites type it. --Clemens Stockner (Talk) 22:57, 13 April 2019 (UTC)
- The JPEG part of his name isn't an acronym. It's Jay-Peg-Mafia not Joint Photographic Experts Group-Mafia, so if we wanna be "correct" his name would be spelled as "Jpegmafia" Crizpie (talk) 23:54, 29 November 2019 (UTC)
- Yeah, in my opinion it should either be Jpegmafia or JPEGMAFIA. No websites from what I've seen spell it as JPEGMafia, and it doesn't really make much sense either way. -Nicenice23 (talk) 23:36, 30 November 2019 (UTC)
- I believe he qualifies for MOS:BIOEXCEPT, so I will proceed with implementing his preferred all caps. Risedemise (talk) 06:06, 25 August 2025 (UTC)
- Risedemise, there is no formal consensus for doing this. Start a proper move request instead of piecemeal capitalization of his articles and moving his discography to an inconsistently (with his main article) capitalized namespace. This is not how you should go about renaming something on Wikipedia, as you have no consensus to do so. If you believe he's a candidate for it, start a move request here to gauge editors' opinions in the community. Then if it's moved you can go about renaming all instances of "JPEGMafia" to "JPEGMAFIA". In the meantime your other edits should be reverted. Skyversay (talk) 09:06, 26 October 2025 (UTC)
- Apologies. I assumed WP:BOLD applied given the discussion was stale and only consisted of a handful of comments, none of which addressed MOS:BIOEXCEPT, which I maintain this is a clear case of. Risedemise (talk) 23:00, 27 October 2025 (UTC)

Peggy even has a track "ALL CAPS NO SPACES", of course it should be all caps, and it doesn't matter how do we think, because the most important here is an artist's idea TheDanikBu (talk) 09:10, 20 April 2020 (UTC)
- It does look odd not being all caps but there is precedent for ignoring artists name stylization. Look at the band fun. CanningIO (talk) 02:26, 28 January 2022 (UTC)
Splitting proposal
[edit]I've received an AFC draft submission to split the discography from this page. Is this worth doing? @Ss112: who created the redirect back in May 2019. AngusWOOF (bark • sniff) 20:23, 20 September 2019 (UTC)
- @AngusWOOF: I agree with your decline—I think if the article were to have more information, like chart positions, then it might be worth a split. But not in its current form. Ss112 22:38, 20 September 2019 (UTC)
- Ss112, I only see one chart position, which is why Jpegmafia even has a page in the first place. AngusWOOF (bark • sniff) 22:40, 20 September 2019 (UTC)

Jpegmafia → JPEGMafia – The current title of this article is a made up name, since his name is never given as Jpegmafia, and Jpeg is like JPEG. What is better, JPEGMafia or JPEGMAFIA? I think JPEGMafia at least adhered to MOS:CAMELCASE, but also, it's a made up form too. JPEGMAFIA is what he is called in reliable sources, but there's no encyclopedia reason to capitalize MAFIA. But I prefer either over Jpegmafia. --Quiz shows 22:27, 15 October 2019 (UTC)

"For trademarks, editors should choose among styles already in common use (not invent new ones) and, among those, use the style that most closely resembles standard English text formatting and capitalization rules." (bold mine). Since it is clear that the current capitalization both a) resembles standard English text formatting and capitalization rules and b) is in common use, we should keep it as it. I will note that the MOS says in common use, NOT most common use, since this one is common enough and follows standard capitalization rules, we should keep it. --Jayron32 16:00, 16 October 2019 (UTC)

- Bogus WP:OFFICIALNAME argument. The entire reason MOS:TM exists is to prevent engaging in case-by-case unusual stylization to ape someone's trademark/logo. — AReaderOutThataway t/c 05:54, 22 October 2019 (UTC)
- Support per MOS:TM, MOS:ABBR, and MOS:CAMEL. JPEG is an initialism. Mafia is not. The name as a whole is a run-together two-word trademark, which would be JPEG Mafia if the space had not been removed. Ergo, JPEGMafia. WP simply does not care at all what the "official" logo rendering is (WP:OFFICIALNAME), and RS usage is all over the map (the music press most often apes the trademark, but they do that with everyone, and it is never, ever a rationale on WP to ape them in turn). The only exceptional cases we permit are ones were RS, of all kinds, are almost totally in agreement on a potentially odd-seeming, stylized rendering (thus Deadmau5 but not Ke$ha, and this is obviously a Ke$ha case; see also Client (band) and a zillion other examples). — AReaderOutThataway t/c 05:54, 22 October 2019 (UTC)

Instagram objection to title
[edit]The artist has since posted an Instagram that disagrees with the newly formatted title, prompting multiple editors to want to change this back to all-caps. Should the title fomat be revisited, or does it even matter? AngusWOOF (bark • sniff) 21:29, 5 November 2019 (UTC)
- Artist preference should not drive Wikipedia formatting. That is why we list the stylized spelling in the lead paragraph, so that users who want to know how to stylize the spelling in their personal usages know how it is stylized. Examples of bands that prefer all caps that on Wikipedia we follow the rules are Gwar, stylized as GWAR, and Awolnation, stylized in all caps show that the editors try to use an even hand when avoiding including band or artist stylization preferences for article titles. I suggest that we follow the rules. Mburrell (talk) 04:41, 15 November 2019 (UTC)
- I will respect these rules, but in the case that peggy is deemed notable enough to have a part on his wikipedia explaining the reason behind his name, I think it should be included that peggy himself is vocally opposed to stylization of "JPEGMAFIA" any other way than "ALL CAPS NO SPACES", might not be encyclopedic but I think It's notable. Gromte (talk) 11:51, 14 May 2020 (UTC)
- Per MOS:BIOEXCEPT, the artist's preferred name formatting, when it is consistently used by the artist and by an overwhelming majority of reliable sources, should in fact be used in Wikipedia articles. Risedemise (talk) 18:56, 18 September 2025 (UTC)

The most reliable source we have is his Bandcamp which he runs. On "JOECHILLWORLD" and "THE ROCKWOOD ESCAPE PLAN" the artist name on the page is Devon Hendryx "The Rockwood Escape Plan" meaning he went under the alias. Crizpie (talk) 01:22, 3 December 2019 (UTC)

Probably a temporary name as he later just uses Devon Hendryx for his previous work prior to JPEGMAFIA (blog example:https://ihrtn.net/from-the-root-to-the-fruit-jpegmafia%E2%80%8F/ ) You could try with the more reliable sources listed but I would work that name into the biography section first before adding it to the infobox. Name capitalization
[edit]By and large the cited sources spell his name in all capitals (JPEGMAFIA). Those that don't, instead only capitalize the first letter (Jpegmafia). Given that cited sources don't use it, I think the current capitalization of the first five letters (JPEGMafia) is synthetic and bizarre. I think MOS:BIOEXCEPT applies to this individual and we should spell his name in his preferred all capitals. Risedemise (talk) 23:08, 27 October 2025 (UTC)
- I would be inclined to agree - there's already a bit of a conflict in the lead of the article, which spells it as "JPEGMafia" but then clarifies that it is "stylized in all caps with no spaces" - which is not how the article stylizes it. "JPEGMafia" is in any case incorrect. It should be either "Jpegmafia" or "JPEGMAFIA". Blaithnaid (talk) 15:04, 23 November 2025 (UTC)

JPEGMafia → JPEGMAFIA – This has gotta be the only website ever where JPEGMAFIA's name is capitalized as "JPEGMafia". On his own article, every source capitalizes his name as "JPEGMAFIA" except three-ish that say "Jpegmafia". This "JPEGMafia" capitalization appears to have been made up by someone who decided that his name should be capitalized the way they wish it could be capitalized. —theMainLogan (t•c) 07:36, 6 June 2026 (UTC) This is a contested technical request (permalink). 1isall (talk | contribs) 03:47, 7 June 2026 (UTC) — Relisting. - Actually yeah I Support Jpegmafia too as not being used as an acronym here but rather just part of a name, and my mind is drawn to the fact that guidelines are meant to be interpreted with common sense. We should avoid making up styles that are unnatural unused, and "JPEGMafia" is clearly that (also I realize there isn't much reason it wouldn't be JPEGmafia if we insist on doing that). So let's treat it like a name and use "Jpegmafia". ⹃Maltazarian ᚾparleyinvestigateᛅ 10:45, 21 June 2026 (UTC)

- Perhaps the parts of MOS:TM and WP:TITLETM that refer to "the style that most closely resembles standard English". We typically encounter JPEG in all-caps, and camelcase mash-ups with each word capitalized are also rather common in English. — BarrelProof (talk) 20:55, 22 June 2026 (UTC)
- MOS:TM also advises us to "not invent new styles that are not used by independent reliable sources." Lowercase Jpegmafia is used in at least some reliable sources, while the mixed-case version appears in none. In fact, the lowercase version even appears on his website if you look carefully. https://shop.jpegmafia.net/collections/all is titled "jpegmafiamerch" (all lowercase), and at the bottom, you can see an imitation filesystem: Jpegmafia HD -> Users -> Jpegmafia -> Products -> ALL. pburka (talk) 21:16, 22 June 2026 (UTC)

- JPEGMafia
- On Scaring the Hoes, the joint album between resident rap eccentric Danny Brown and JPEGMafia, the latter wrangles an almost impossible emotional texture out of distorted electronics and chaotic drum sequences. It’s a hallmark of JPEGMafia’s work, which by now spans more than a decade, first in the underground corners of the internet and more recently in the mainstream. His rise is indicative of the kind of hip-hop star that actually makes sense in this new era, where virality is a given but fan devotion isn’t. “Peggy” as he’s affectionately known by his fans is uniquely gifted in how he’s able to transmit a feeling – often something close to delirium and rage – with the authenticity of a close friend. It’s why, at a recent concert in new York City, you could hear chants of “Peggy” ring out from hordes of teenage devotees. JPEGMafia has spent much of his career on the fringes, but onlny because he was so far ahead of his time. Now, it seems, the rest of the world is beginning to catch up. – J.I
