Mistake!

Mount Epomeo is the 786 m highest peak in Ischia but it is not a volcano and has never been. It is the result of the rise of the rocks in the last 30,000 years. --87.18.21.68 10:15, 15 September 2006 (UTC)

Cumae connection?

The earliest Greek colony on the mainland was founded from here, on the coast of Campania at Cumae, likely to have been named for the Euboean city of Cuma, possibly by settlers who fled volcanic activity.

I think I was the one who added this text, perhaps from an official or touristical Ischia site. The Mycenaean settlement here pre-dated Cumae, but was Cumae founded from here, rather than from Kymi in Boeotia? --Wetman 13:09, 5 October 2006 (UTC)

Ancient reference to monkeys on Pithecusae

The article states that no ancient sources mention monkeys on the island. This is incorrect. Ovid says 'Bereft of its pilot, Palinurus, he follows the coast by Inarime, Prochyte, and Pithecusae, on its barren hill, named after its inhabitants, from pithecium, a little ape." How is the subject of sanitation on the island progressing?

I am planning a visit to Ischia in May. My concern is the attempt to improve sanitation. Has there been progress in this area recently? JJniebch (talk) 14:01, 20 January 2019 (UTC)

It is beyond ridiculous for an article like this to force readers to hunt to find what country Ischia belongs to.

Please kindly mention which country it is in in the first sentence of the article.

Question re: sources for the Etymology section

Question re: the etymology section - where are the sources? A lot of it appears to be speculative with no reference to peer-reviewed scholarship, and no proper citations for ancient sources (or links - when most of the sources listed are available to view for free online!).

Primary Examples: 1. "According to… the Alexandrian historian Senagora-" Where? Ovid does not mention a "Senagora" in his Metamorphoses, nor can I find any Alexandrian historian named "Senagora." Is this referring to Xenagoras of Rhodes, who did write about Magna Graecia (per the Oxford Classical Dictionary)? But he's from Rhodes, so I'm still unsure who this is meant to be. Regardless, the specific fragment should be cited.

3. The entire section on resin appears to be speculative. "It has been proposed-" by who? Who has proposed this? Again, citation needed.

4. "The name Aenaria, also used by the Latins, is linked to metallurgical workshops" - this claim is also uncited.

5. There is no citation for the Pope Leo III letter.

6. "Some scholars connect the term to the Phoenician world-" I am once again asking: who? Who are these scholars? The citation status of this section is abhorrent.

7. The speculation on Ischia's etymology is also severely lacking. It is entirely devoid of citations.

8. Virgil is cited, but no book or line number is given. (The only citation is Iliad II.783? Which is distinctly not Virgil, nor mentions Pithekoussai.)

9. "The Romans called it Aenaria-" There is no citation, for either this or the claim that Pithekoussai, in the plural, includes Procida.

10. The citation for the Etruscan word arimos is exclusively Robinson 2002, who also cites Virgil without a line number. There is no other reference to Etruscan scholarship. I am not as familiar with the Etruscans, but I find this citation lacking as well.

11. Pliny, when cited again, is vaguely referenced by "Princeton Encyclopedia."

12. The specific claim about 'no reference in ancient sources' should probably be backed up with a comprehensive list or, at the very least, an article about Pithekoussai?

I can fix the Pliny citation using more credible online sources (through Perseus & Thayer's UChicago Latin text), but I'm confused as to where the rest of the section is coming from. If anyone remembers the academic sources for these uncited sections, please plug them in! Otherwise I'll just do more research on the topic and edit accordingly.
