Stable compound

Iodine with valence of 3 is supposed to exist in IO45− found in the compound in Ma, Nan; Chen, Jin; Li, Bing‐Xuan; Hu, Chun‐Li; Mao, Jiang‐Gao (November 2023). "(NH 4 ) 2 (I 5 O 12 )(IO 3 ) and K 1.03 (NH 4 ) 0.97 (I 5 O 12 )(IO 3 ): Mixed‐Valent Polyiodates with Unprecedented I 5 O 12 − Unit Exhibiting Strong Second‐Harmonic Generation Responses and Giant Birefringence". I think I5O12 is worth mentioning as an example of a (stable) polyiodate containing iodine(III). While it is formally derivable via condensation of [IIIIO4]5− and [IVO3] units, we should be careful not to imply it contains isolated [IIIIO4]5− ions.
The section on polyiodates in the just-published review Kang, Yuwei; Hu, Chun-Li; Zhang, Cai-Chun; Mao, Jiang-Gao (2026). "Recent Progress in Iodate Based Nonlinear Optical Crystals". Chemical Science. doi:10.1039/D5SC10104B. describes I5O12 as:

an I3+ ion ... coordinated by four O atoms from distinct [IVO3] groups, forming a square-planar [IIIIO4]5− unit. All four [IVO3] groups are situated on the same side of this square plane, collectively assembling into a novel bowl-shaped polymeric unit [IIII(IVO3)4].

The paper you've cited makes this clear this is a discrete I5O12 ion: it's only polymeric in the sense that it's a polyiodate. A third paper (doi:10.1002/anie.202504673) provides a name for the ion: tetraiodatoiodate(III). Preimage (talk) 13:49, 21 April 2026 (UTC)Reply
