Geography - Coasts and Shelves
[edit]Coming to this article looking for information on depths, I was confused by the paragraph discussing Active Margins and Passive Margins. This paragraph states the average depths in these two regions of the ocean, with depth values that are far greater than the ocean itself. After reading the linked articles discussing ocean margins, I have concluded that this is referring to the depth of the mantle below the ocean in these regions. If I am correct in my conclusion, it might be helpful to make this point clearer to casual readers who might think this is referring to the depth of the water. - Thanks for pointing out the errors. I cleaned them up a bit. The section could use much more editing work. For example, the Indian ocean is not literally "centered on the Indian Peninsula". Mgnbar (talk) 23:00, 11 March 2023 (UTC)
Environment section
[edit]Is there any particular reason why the Indian Ocean page is the only ocean page to not have an Environment section? 217.100.95.74 (talk) 02:38, 11 April 2024 (UTC)
contribution of Michael D. Cox to knowledge of the Indian Ocean
[edit]It seems like mention should be made of the contribution (long ago: year 1970) of Michael D. Cox to knowledge of the Indian Ocean. He created a mathematical model of the Indian Ocean, and, so far as I can see from a brief google search, no one has ever offered anything that would make it obsolete (i.e., of historical interest only). Here is the link to his article: https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/abs/pii/0011747170900872 Also, here is the link to an eulogy of his life and work: chrome-extension://efaidnbmnnnibpcajpcglclefindmkaj/https://journals.ametsoc.org/view/journals/phoc/21/9/1520-0485_1991_021_1259_mchpct_2_0_co_2.pdf Kontribuanto (talk) 04:15, 24 November 2024 (UTC)
New "Blue Crime" section
[edit]The new section "Blue Crime" adds a lot of material, which is admirable. However, I think that it gives undue weight to this topic. It's about as long as the Geology or Trade sections. So, unless an argument is made here, I plan to pare it down (but not remove it) in the coming days.
Moreover, it's not clear to me that the image of young dark-skinned men brandishing weapons is helpful. Maybe the original image, showing a pirate boat that happens to have these men on it, would be better? Unfortunately the US Navy link in the image file is broken. Hmm. July 2025
[edit]@Remsense: Can you explain how adding the link to Indian subcontinent in the etymology section where it says "named after India, which projects into it
" is "needless overlinking"? Since it is talking about the peninsular projection of the Indian subcontinent, or the Indian peninsula (which redirects to the subcontinent article), into the ocean. UnpetitproleX (talk) 05:29, 2 July 2025 (UTC)
- Since I haven't gotten an answer, I will re-edit, but link "projects into it" (instead of India) to the Indian peninsula. UnpetitproleX (talk) 18:59, 9 July 2025 (UTC)
