Early sunrise?
[edit]I'm not sure if this is significant enough to mention, because the article has a severe lack of context, but it's been reported that the sun appeared two days early in Ilulissat this year: . It's not clear whether that's connected with global warming or some other phenomenon. Robofish (talk) 22:47, 17 January 2011 (UTC)
- Yes I think something about this recent weirdness would be entirely appropriate for the article, even if the causes are not yet known, because people are going to come here looking for answers. Apparently (the following is not really appropriate for a citation, but so far it's the best info I could find) it has nothing to with a lowered horizon due to glacial melting, and was (probably) some kind of atmospheric phenomenon (a very slight temporary change in refraction of the atmosphere at the horizon, normally roughly half a degree, perhaps):
- (see comment 5 by the Greenland HS teacher - sound legit to me, but of course a verifiable reference would be required for the article). Jtrbnsn (talk) 21:57, 18 January 2011 (UTC)

Still a stub?
[edit]Personally I disagree with the tag of this article being a stub, should it be removed? -user:Year1888 13:13 (GMT+1)
2 Refs with same url
[edit]The table of temperatures and precipitation has two refs at the end of it that use the same url, brings one to the same page, written in Danish. I did not delete the second one, not sure what source the editor who put it there meant to put. Should the duplicate be deleted? - - Prairieplant (talk) 23:09, 14 October 2024 (UTC)
- The 2 refs with same url are part of Source 1 in the Climate table, 1st and 3rd references. - - Prairieplant (talk) 23:12, 14 October 2024 (UTC)

Ilulissat is the municipal seat and largest town of the municipality of Avannaata in western Greenland. It is located on the eastern shore of Disko Bay, just north of the Ilulissat Icefjord World Heritage Site, and approximately 350 km (220 mi) north of the Arctic Circle. With a population of 5,149 as of 2025, it is the third-largest city in Greenland, after Nuuk and Sisimiut. The area around the town was inhabited by Inuit peoples from prehistoric times, with evidence of Saqqaq and Dorset settlements. Dutch whalers traded extensively with the local population from the 17th century and referred to the area as Maklykout. Ilulissat was later established as a trading post by Jacob Severin's company in 1741, and was named in his honor after the Battle of Jacobshavn, in which Danish forces defeated the Dutch whalers. The town was the site of the Arctic Ocean Conference in 2008, in which representatives from Canada, Denmark, Norway, Russia and the United States met to discuss territorial claims in the Arctic. This 2024 photograph shows a panorama of Ilulissat taken from the south west. Photograph credit: Ekrem Canli
