The version we learned to sing as children (U.S., mid-20th century) had "The King of Spain's fair daughter" at the start of the second verse. Omitting "fair" messes up the meter. Billfalls (talk) 14:54, 28 July 2022 (UTC)Reply

I sang this many years ago in Australia. The version was as in the article. Surely, this version reflects old pronunciation when 's was pronounced as a separate syllable? We still do in some circumstances "St James's Palace" "witch's broom". The apostrophe indicates some people thought it was an abbreviation of "his". Dr. Johnson seems to have realised it is a survival of an old declension inflection. Sorry I am not expert enough to cite relevant passages.
