"Holdall" and "Duffel bag" should not be merged

"Holdall" and "Duffel bag" should not be merged because: A holdall - is more similar to a grip, although unlike a grip it is historically made of leather.

Furthermore, a holdall almost always has grab handles and is typically used for sports and travel whereas a duffel bag is more synonymous with a handless cylindrical tube cloth bag which has an historically military use.

This article is a mess, it's called a duffel bag in America

This article is utterly fallacious. No one in America uses these terms, duffel bag is the term most commonly used, including by most manufacturers and retailers. Historically it may have referred to something different, but the language has changed.

Since this article starts by specifically referring to "American English", then it should not be misleading people in how these terms are actually used in the United States (at least). It's not 'mistaken' to call a duffel bag a duffel bag. I don't even know where to start on editing this, and since Wikipedia editors are weird and capricious I'm not going to waste my time on edits that would just be reversed.. But I just have to point out how ridiculous this article is, and it should be flagged for overhaul. AnswerManDan (talk) 08:22, 12 February 2025 (UTC)

I also agree with this. The name holdall also seems to be missing from the references on British usage which is particularly odd. The only reference to "holdall" as a primary term seems to be the comment on a differently structured item of luggage used in India which does not match the rest at all.

I would be OK with this article being renamed to something like sports bag or gym bag as those are about as common for describing the partially rigid style bag as the more layman "duffle bag" term is, if someone insists on completely seperating the two modern bag styles referred to as duffle/duffel bag in commerce. But as it stands we have no real justification for the term "holdall" to be preferred article name. Fishmech (talk) 07:19, 21 January 2026 (UTC)

I am also in agreement with this. In my experience in Canada (SW Ontario to be specific), this type of bag is exclusively referred to as a duffle bag, or less commonly---but not rarely---as a gym bag. ~2026-31041-31 (talk) 18:01, 16 July 2026 (UTC)
