The Beatles, Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin, Rolling Stones etc are not Baby Boomers. They were born from 1940-1945, which is the youngest of the Silent Generation.

[edit]

The Silent Generation is defined as those born 1928-1945. Baby Boomers are defined as those born 1946-1964, with the Generation Jones cuspers as 1955-1964. Elvis Presley, Little Richard, Chuck Berry are Silent Generation members who were born in the 1930s. However, they were the ones who developed Rock n Roll during the 1950s and have nothing to do with hippies at all. However, the Beatles, Jimi Hendrix, Eric Clapton etc are the youngest members of the Silent Generation born in the 40s during World War 2, who were involved in 1960s and early 70s music. They are not Boomers at all, so I don't understand what kind of nonsense editors were putting in the article page. 2601:940:C180:3DB0:A515:D8A0:D5F5:E04D (talk) 09:01, 26 March 2023 (UTC)Reply

"The Silent Generation is defined as those born 1928-1945". Per the article on the Silent Generation: "People born in the later years of World War II who were too young to have any direct recollections of the conflict are sometimes considered to be culturally, if not demographically, baby boomers." Chuck Berry was born in 1926, and was part of the Greatest Generation (1901-1927). Dimadick (talk) 04:05, 27 March 2023 (UTC)Reply

I don't quite get the new opening montage. We've got kids going to Woodstock, marginally hippie-ish; a peace demonstration (there was certainly an intersection between hippie and anti-war demonstrators, but no equivalence at all, and none of the people in this picture appear in hippie garb or in any other way seem hippie; Carlos Santana (not a hippie) handprints at an Olympic venue. What's the point of including these? --jpgordon𝄢𝄆𝄐𝄇 07:11, 5 October 2023 (UTC)Reply

What actual argument is there for keeping "lovemaking"

[edit]

I see no real argument to breaking MOS:EUPH, yet two different editors fixing the use of a euphemism in this article are reverted. "It has been here for a long time" isn't an argument, it is simply an oversight of editors. There is a reason this page has a tag on it's writing style, and now editors are trying to improve it and they are reverted. Am I missing a WP or MOS rule?

Thanks for talk-paging this. The term "lovemaking" in the context seems accurate (i.e. hippies) and, more importantly, the word 'sex' is used quite a few times in the section already and throwing in a "lovemaking" fits both within an accurate context and to break up the repetitiveness. MOS:EUPH says words such as this "should generally be avoided", not a blanket ban. In this context the long-term wording arguably fits well. Randy Kryn (talk) 13:49, 19 June 2026 (UTC)Reply
But lovemaking only appears once (our situation) and make love or making love only appears in references to topics/bluelinks (like make love not war). It is explained nowhere, (making it confusing for people trying to learn about the topic. ("how does lovemaking differ from having sex?") This one appearance is a confusing outlier in the article. If there was a pattern of usage, perhaps, but this just seems like a random addition. I would personally say that lovemaking should be replaced with "casual sex" to make it more informative. Although an addition such as "a word hippies preferred over having sex" could also work, but that would probably hard to source.

I noticed I'm getting a bit too aggressive over a very little thing, my apologies if I made anyone feel uncomfortable. I recently got on some meds which have some annoying side effects (nothing psychological, just can't go into the sun) and I've had a really tedious work day, so I'm probably just pushing those feelings into editing.
I'll wait for other editors to jump in first before I ruin my own weekend haha.
