"He never married".

[edit]

In the pre-Stonewall days, the expression "He never married" was a euphemism often employed in the Obituary pages of newspapers to indicate that a person was gay. Is there any implication to be read into that here? I'm not trying to imply that this is relevant to his status as an editorial cartoonist, but I am curious.Partnerfrance (talk) 17:00, 11 May 2017 (UTC)Reply

This is the only place I've found where he talks about that. He said he'd had girlfriends, but somehow never was inclined to get married: http://www.booknotes.org/Watch/52323-1/Herbert-Block Make of it what you will. Mahousu (talk) 13:25, 9 February 2019 (UTC)Reply

50 million dollar estate?

[edit]

Most of Herblock's cartoons were topical of their time, so I was interested to learn how he managed to leave such a high-value estate, since the publishing rights to his works would be an asset of rapidly diminishing importance. (His was not a Charles Schulz portfolio of beloved characters and merchandising royalties.) Apparently, the bulk of Herblock's wealth consisted of all the Washington Post stock he accumulated over the many years of working there. 73.51.218.241 (talk) 02:29, 8 December 2024 (UTC)Reply

Yeah, my first thought was that it was vandalism. Viriditas (talk) 07:42, 14 March 2026 (UTC)Reply
