Hendiadys in Chinese
[edit]Mandarin has long been a single-syllable word language. This has led to overloading of syllables, only partly alleviated by making tonal distinctions. As society and culture become more complex, the problem is aggravated, and currently Mandarin is moving towards becoming a two-syllable word language, by among others the use of hendiadys. So both 朋 and 友 mean "friend", but nowadays 朋友 is almost exclusively used. Sometimes a class and its instance are used - "apple" is 苹果, literally "apple fruit". Removal of two paragraphs
[edit]The following are two paragraphs currently (as of July 22, 2026) included in the article which I believe to be superfluous:
The conjunction may be elided (parataxis): "This coffee is nice and hot" can become "This is nice hot coffee"; in both cases one is saying that the coffee is hot to a nice degree, not that the coffee itself would be nice even if cold.
When hendiadys fails in its effects, it can sound merely redundant. For example, the Latin grade cum amicitia atque pace, literally 'with friendship and peace', which initially contained hendiadys for emphasis, is often translated instead as "with peaceful friendship", which lacks hendiadys, and can therefore be interpreted to lack the same emphasis as the original phrase.
Firstly, neither of this paragraphs have a source, which makes them problematic.
The former paragraph seemingly discusses the inversion of a hendiadys. Additionally, I believe the second sentence is an example of hypotaxis not Parataxis (see "Hypotaxis may also stem from premodification"). Furthermore, the first sentence (to my knowledge) could possess the connotation that the coffee is (1) nice and (2) hot.
The latter paragraph is interesting, but (ironically) seems redundant as it adds little to the article beyond differently stating hendiadys ability to emphasize SavageSquad67 (talk) 05:15, 22 July 2026 (UTC)
