French Article
[edit]As I can read and speak French well, I've taken it upon myself to translate the French article into the French into English but instead replaced French expressions with more English ones (e.g. "cultural exchange" instead of lit. "cultural miscegnation" or "mixing").
Note, however, that the French article has a different scope than either this article or of Hellenistic civilization (perhaps a new article altogether should be created?) — ዮም (Yom) | contribs • Talk • E 00:13, 7 July 2006 (UTC)
1st installment (hope I didn't skip anything for intro)! — ዮም (Yom) | contribs • Talk • E 00:13, 7 July 2006 (UTC)
I am changing Hellenistic period from a redirect to a translation of the French article, bit by bit (I've removed the section translation that was above). — ዮም | (Yom) | Talk • contribs • Ethiopia 05:15, 16 July 2006 (UTC)
Title
[edit]O la la! I am sorry, the "Hellenistic Greece" is quite nonsense. Greece was ALLWAYS "Hellenistic". The Macedonian empire was "Hellenised". Please tell us which French page you translated. I am French and would like to see what kind of text this is. I am sorry quite a lot of corrections are probably needed on the pages about the Ancient history. Herodotus1A (talk) 10:20, 18 February 2009 (UTC)
This seems to be mainly about a period in Greece. Classical - Hellenistic - Roman etc.. Hellenistic is also a chronological term 62.1.173.6 (talk) 07:17, 17 June 2009 (UTC)
Merge proposal?
[edit]Where is the discussion on the merge proposal? This page should not be merged with Hellenistic Civilization or Hellenistic Period in a wholesale way. Hellenistic Greece is phrase used to define a regional historical description analogous to Seleucid Syria or Ptolemaic Egypt. However, a close reading of these three pages could reveal sections which could benefit from some removal of duplicate material and appropriate interlinking. Anarchangel23 (talk) 02:09, 22 November 2009 (UTC)
The discussion on a merge has been dead for over a year, I'm going to remove the tag on those grounds. Further, Hellenistic Period is as noted, very different from Hellenistic Greece or Hellenistic Civilization. If the term is to be avoided, we'd have to make articles for each part of the period in Greece termed Hellenistic like 'Kassandrid Greece', 'Antigonid Greece', 'Greece under Pyrrhus', etc... for the purposes of Wiki, I think that's a bit of overkill. Sources?
[edit]This article has no citations whatsoever. This is a problem. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 134.48.160.127 (talk) 17:50, 26 September 2012 (UTC)
Introduction
[edit]This is a very informative article, and I really appreciate the way that the time frame of this period was oriented with the mention of key historical figures from around this time. One edit, which might be beneficial, would be restructuring the first two sentences for clarity, between the approximate beginnings and ends from one period to the next. TheOliveGreen1234567 (talk) 23:47, 8 April 2021 (UTC)
- How do you know? Where are the inline citations? I can tell you right now the article is full of mistakes, but correcting this mess will take some effort, and I'm involved in other articles that take up my time/resources. 50.111.15.21 (talk) 08:36, 2 October 2021 (UTC)
Needs Improvement of the Sources
[edit]The articles content is really good, however the article is in need of some major citations. The information mainly comes from 2 sources, which is also a problem. I would suggest expanding on the sources and including more than just the 2 that are there. In addition adding in text citations so people will know where the information is coming from.
Article title and lead
[edit]
There was not consensus at the recent AfD for a move to "Greece in the Hellenistic period" and that discussion doesn't provide a sound basis for moving. The proposer switched from proposing deletion to proposing a move very late, by which time there was clearly no chance that the AfD would succeed and no point in discussing it further with the proposer; participants had therefore left the room. Evidence had been presented that Hellenistic Greece remained an appropriate title, in keeping with other article naming here on Wikipedia and many titles of books listed on Google Scholar, as more than one participant pointed out. The last comment was that the proposer's argument made no sense "either at face value or in terms of policy
". Not only did the late proposal not have consensus among the participants at the AfD, but also no attempt had been made to gain consensus for it by proposing it as a RM and listing it as such, which would have drawn another part of the community, interested and often experienced in article naming policy and practice, into the discussion to discuss it in different terms.
I have therefore returned the article to its Hellenistic Greece title per the closer's edit summary (not part of the AfD close) "Cavarrone moved page Hellenistic Greece to Greece in the Hellenistic period: per AfD discussion, there seems to be a consensus that this is a more appropriate title. Feel free to revert and open a discussion on the talk page if you disagree.
". I will also revert the proposer's amendment of the beginning of the article, which not only reflected the name change but redefined the scope of the article, in keeping with the arguments they have been presenting at other articles (Macedonia (ancient kingdom), Makedon (mythology), Alexander the Great, Pella curse tablet and more) and their talk pages distinguishing Macedonia from Greece, arguments which have not gained consensus despite much discussion. That redefinition was at odds with the actual scope of the article in the remainder of the lead and the article body. NebY (talk) 19:56, 2 October 2026 (UTC)
