Gap?

[edit]

Anyone have more information on the gap in route 31 / P'iilani Highway?

"The highway formerly ran parallel to the coast all the way to the southern terminus of the Hana Highway (Route 360), until developments in Wailea and Makena blocked access."

It's referenced here but cannot seem to find references to it elsewhere - was the road originally connected and then removed? When and why? Or was it never completed/connected? --Chris (talk) 12:14, 9 January 2021 (UTC)Reply

I added a citation needed to that part. After close to two hours of searching online (including looking at many old road maps of Maui), I could find no reliable evidence that these two sections of road were ever connected. Some old, not-to-scale maps indicated that there might have been a trail or a proposed road up the hill from Wailea-Makena, but I was unable to find any evidence of such a road ever existing. The only maps showing this supposed route did not include anything like scales, legends, or road labels.
Anecdotally, I know from personal experience that there are gated private roads that go up the hill between Wailea-Makena and Highway 37, but they are not public rights of way, and as far as I know, have never been. These private roads also do not follow any path that would indicate that any of them were built as a section of the Pi'ilani Highway. Narglefargle (talk) 21:42, 9 October 2025 (UTC)Reply
