Translation of ispán

[edit]

@Norden1990, When translating ispán to English, why is it better rendered as comes than count? When I looked at Ispán, count is given as another name and comes (parochialis) is given as the latin translation. Köszönöm. Cairobinz (talk) 16:32, 28 September 2025 (UTC)Reply

@Cairobinz:, it can be misunderstood since ispán (or comes) was a county official in medieval Hungary who was appointed by the king to administer the county. It is roughly equivalent with sheriffs in medieval England. The count , i.e. hereditary noble title appeared in Hungary only in the 15-16th centuries. --Norden1990 (talk) 21:01, 29 September 2025 (UTC)Reply
