Naruto

Naruto contains various references to the Nine-Tailed fox. (Indeed, the part of the protagonist is the Nine Tailed Fox!) However, Naruto is Japanese manga and so I suppose it is incorrect to put it in an article on the Korean counterpart of the Nine Tailed mythology. Mateen Ulhaq (talk) 11:36, 10 December 2015 (UTC)

Hoshi no tama

The article reads as follows:

The most distinctive feature that separates the kumiho from its two counterparts (Japanese kitsune, and Chinese huli jing) is the existence of a 'yeowoo guseul' (여우구슬, literally meaning fox marble/bead) which is said to consist of knowledge. According to Korean mythology, the yeowoo guseul provides power to the kumiho and knowledge (and intelligence) to people if they can steal and swallow one.

This seems to be like it might be related to a kitsune's hoshi no tama, making it not fully a distinctive feature. Though the hoshi no tama generally seems to be not remotely as important in most kitsune stories as it is to the kumiho whose vampiric nature is a defining feature. An interesting difference

I was looking on Naver (Korean google) and what they had to say about the Kumiho and it's a bit different to how the West depicts them. They aren't truly evil they're more self centered if anything. While it's true Kumiho are more likely malevolent than benevolent creatures it seems it's not as common as this article depicts them. The Korean Naver says in many versions of the myth is if one falls in love or refrains from liver consumption it becomes human (this is mentioned) however what isn't mentioned is that when consumed enough souls or livers a Kumiho will actually become a dragon or a being on a similar level as a dragon. which this article mentions also carries around a marble. The marble is interesting too (also its in basically all Kumiho myths). It's basically the Kumiho's soul. Like the dragon if you take away the marble it's basically screwed. The Naver also mentions thinks the reason why people in the West consider Kumiho as only evil is because of the SCP Foundation which probably isn't true but it's quite funny. 2001:56A:6FE7:57C5:B962:372C:B5E3:B835 (talk) 21:43, 7 March 2023 (UTC)

It surely would be interesting to included that perspective into the article. One would need to have reliable sources to back that up though (while the article overall has the problem of being none-to-well sourced anyway), and then someone would need to work that in... Document improvement plan

As far as I can see, secondary scholarship on the Korean fox tradition (kumiho) is still very limited, and the field is effectively at an early stage where the main task is to collect and examine primary sources.
