Inaccurate Information

This article contains a lot of inaccurate information about the guitarlele, partly because it relies on other websites that are also incorrect. The correct name for this instrument is “guitarlele.” It was introduced by Yamaha in 1997 and is the first commercially produced instrument of its kind. Many people mistakenly claim that it’s based on earlier instruments—but it isn’t.

The requinto does not sound like the guitarlele, since its body is much larger. The same holds true for the 18th-century “quint” guitars mentioned in the article. Other names in this article refer to brands that appeared later and only add confusion.

I’m making this comment as a longtime composer who plays more than 20 instruments (including the guitarlele) and who writes and records commercially licensed music for libraries under contract, as well as music for retail sale. Controversy?

Terminology

I believe the following terms also refer to the same instrument:

• 1/4 guitar
• soprano guitar
• piccolo guitar (piccolo = "little")
