the french article says they're uninhabited. is that true?


There are no permanent inhabitants. Up until 2000 there was a manned meteorological station, plus a gendarme to represent French authority, and a small 14-man army detachment to defend french interests. The meteorological station is now automated, but the gendarme and military personnel remain. The island is a natural reserve and nobody else is allowed to land. All these personnel were there on short (6 weeks to 3 months) assignments. The airstrip is used by the french Armée de l'Air for resupply, and a navy ship also brings resupply every few months.

I spent several days on the island on a few separate occasions between 1998 and 2000 when I was in the Foreign Legion, overseeing the change-over of personnel. I have some nice photos. 91.176.128.106 (talk) 13:11, 17 December 2007 (UTC)ChrisReply
