Possible misleading information

[edit]

This line in the lede "About 2,000-3,000 activists are expected to gather in Egypt, enter Israel, then camp in Gaza for three days"..it says the activists will "enter Israel" and "Camp in Gaza". I looked at the references used as well as other references and statements by the organizers I've come across, none reference "Entering Israel" as a goal or part of the plan. neither do they mention camping "in Gaza", the sources indicate it will all be inside Egyptian territory. I suggest we change it to what the source does say which is " gather in Egypt, head to the Rafah crossing and camp there for three days before returning to Cairo on the 19th"

I didn't want to correct it myself in case there is some sources I missed, but I think if this isn't in any reliable source it's sort of inflammatory and should be removed. Tashmetu (talk) 15:55, 12 June 2025 (UTC)Reply

Hi Tashmetu, as you did, I also reacted to "enter Israel, then camp in Gaza for three days". As if Israel would allow them to do that! So I checked the sources and rewrote the lead. Friendly, Lova Falk (talk) 17:00, 12 June 2025 (UTC)Reply
Didn't see this topic before, but also noticed there wasn't RS for attempting to enter Gaza claim. In fact, according to organisers, they are not attempting to enter, hence added to the content and re-worded lead also to reflect this. CNC (talk) 12:43, 14 June 2025 (UTC)Reply

Response by Egypt

[edit]

It says "Furthermore, according to the organizers, police set up checkpoints around 30 kilometers from Ismailia," But they didn't "set up" checkpoints, the checkpoint where everyone was stopped is the (permanent) Ismailia toll station (located at 30.4061917, 31.9969655). An estimated 1 thousand people stayed at the checkpoint and began a protest along with Mandela (who has since been detained). The rest returned to Cairo. I cannot prove this because its first hand experience but someone should look into it more to find a source to cite. 172.56.180.137 (talk) 20:25, 13 June 2025 (UTC)Reply

I should say some also made it through to Ismailia but they were attacked by police there and are currently being deported after being driven back into Cairo on busses. 172.56.180.137 (talk) 20:27, 13 June 2025 (UTC)Reply
Sorry, not deported, but taken to the airport forcibly and coerced into leaving
Technically not deportation, legally 172.56.180.137 (talk) 20:41, 13 June 2025 (UTC)Reply
The claim is accurate, as it is attributed. Please provide an reliable source that contradicts this, not WP:OR. CNC (talk) 12:41, 14 June 2025 (UTC)Reply
I wasn't requesting that my information be included, I'm aware that information must cite a reliable source, I was just making a slight correction hoping someone else could find a better source 172.58.160.76 (talk) 16:39, 14 June 2025 (UTC)Reply
It's fine now anyway 172.58.160.76 (talk) 16:40, 14 June 2025 (UTC)Reply

Responses by Protesters

[edit]

In the "Responses" section, under the "Protesters" sub-section, the second paragraph begins with the following text: "On 16 June, activists accused Egyptian authorities of forced deportation (...)".

It should be changed to simply "deportation", considering that deportation is, by definition, a non-voluntary process. "Forced deportation" does not mean anything and is actually fairly poor language.  Preceding unsigned comment added by 2a01:e0a:a15:a400:5d3d:5904:7000:1e5b (talk) 13:32, 20 June 2025 (UTC)Reply

Fixed Good point! Lova Falk (talk) 08:01, 24 June 2025 (UTC)Reply
This is not true, the IP editor is incorrect - "forced deportation" is a legal term of art, vs voluntary deportation. A quick search returns things like this. Smallangryplanet (talk) 08:52, 24 June 2025 (UTC)Reply
@ Smallangryplanet. Reverted. Thank you for your correction! Not done. Lova Falk (talk) 08:55, 24 June 2025 (UTC)Reply
No worries! Smallangryplanet (talk) 08:56, 24 June 2025 (UTC)Reply
Thanks for correction, for context there were also "voluntary deportations" that occurred, along the lines of 'get on that flight back home or be detained'. So the forced deportations were those who refused deportation, effectively. Probably the legal terminology side of things makes more sense, but there is also the context to consider as it were, or at least distinguishing the two scenarios. Disbanded not cancelled

[edit]

(I was a participant) The march had several attempted starts and participants successfully assembled in Cairo. Saying the march was "disbanded" is more accurate than "cancelled," given that it was actively in progress. 68.108.183.8 (talk) 19:42, 25 June 2025 (UTC)Reply

Hi you! If you can find WP:reliable sources that say disbanded, I can change that for you. Friendly, Lova Falk (talk) 06:34, 26 June 2025 (UTC)Reply
Per content, the march was due to start from Al-Arish on 15 June, and participants never made it there (as far as reporting goes). Instead they were prevented from reaching the starting point of the march, thus is was cancelled a day later. Travelling from Cairo to Al-Arish was not part of the march based on it's coverage, but instead part of the plan for the march, leading up to it. But as Lova Falk said above, if you find reliable sources that contradict the content, then the wording can be improved or elaborated upon. CNC (talk) 12:13, 26 June 2025 (UTC)Reply

"promotional and unbalanced"

[edit]

@Esperfulmo:, you added these two templates to the article. Could you please expand on what it is in the article that you find promotional and unbalanced, so we editors who have worked on this article can agree on what to change? Friendly, Lova Falk (talk) 09:54, 29 June 2025 (UTC)Reply

Likewise, I've done a lot of work on this article and always made sure to be careful on wording, attribution, and as well as adhering to NPOV. This is otherwise as far away from promotion as possible, given it documents an event (or at least the attempts at one), and there is very limited primary sourcing which should be a major clue. If there's not a lot from Egyptian authorities, for example, it's because they didn't have a lot to say (aside from unnamed officials that is which is included in the content for balance). You can't provide an additional point of view if it doesn't exist basically. Israel had their say and it is included herein. It's unclear what you think needs to be added to improve balance, or removed in order to be less promotional. Additionally when leaving such templates, per WP:WTRMT and template documentation, you need to explain your reasoning, otherwise these templates will simply be removed as unjustified. CNC (talk) 12:26, 29 June 2025 (UTC)Reply
You'll also need to explain WP:COI accusation as well. Who are you referring to and why? CNC (talk) 12:29, 29 June 2025 (UTC)Reply
