An ambiguity

[edit]

Good work, Kseni-kam! However, it's ambiguous in one place. It currently tells the reader:

. . . Varya's face in Fechin's painting lacks carefree happiness; it is serious and anxious in an unchildlike way. In Gofman's view, this image is much closer to Golovin's Frosya than the bright images of Serebriakova's children

This is fully idiomatic English, but it can mean either of two different things. However, with one tiny addition or other, the meaning would become unambiguous. Unfortunately I cannot read Russian (and I do not trust Google Translate for a job such as this), and therefore I cannot "disambiguate". Depending on what Gofman actually says, please change this to one or other of:

. . . Varya's face in Fechin's painting lacks carefree happiness; it is serious and anxious in an unchildlike way. In Gofman's view, this image is much closer to Golovin's Frosya than it is to the bright images of Serebriakova's children

(This means: In Gofman's view, Fechin's painting is closer to Golovin's painting than Fechin's painting is to Serebriakova's paintings.)

Thank you for accepting the article and for your suggestion. It's the second version you recommended. I just made the change. Kseni-kam (talk) 18:21, 12 August 2025 (UTC)Reply
