Pronunciation

How is the name pronounced? I ask because there are two towns in England with this name, but one is pronounced /ˈdʒɪlɪŋəm/ and the other is /ˈɡɪlɪŋəm/. Beorhtwulf (talk) 14:30, 18 December 2018 (UTC)Reply

@Beorhtwulf: I am pretty rusty on my pronunciation verbage, but I will do my best as a Wisconsin resident to write it. I would pronounce the first part similar to the part of a fish and the second syllable as the pork product. Thank you, that's clear enough that I can safely say your first option would be /ˈɡɪlɪŋhæm/ in IPA, which would be expected in American English, similar to how the H in "Birmingham" is pronounced in the city in Alabama and silent in the city in England. Your second option will be either /ˈɡɪlɪŋəm/ (probably) or /ˈɡɪlɪŋæm/ (maybe) depending on what people do with the vowel in the final syllable if they drop the H. @Beorhtwulf: I think I was intending for the former on the second pronunciation. If your interested in a more linguistic perspective than I can give, the articles North-Central American English and Inland Northern American English might help. Wisconsin is on the border of both dialects so you hear a good mixture of both.
