Location of the Giant Arc

[edit]

Is it possible to include the coordinates of the Giant Arc? (R.A. / Decl.). I want to add the name Giant Arc to my alphabetic list of astronomy-related names of objects in the universe (names of objects in our solar system not included). I want to know in which one of Eugene Delporte's I.A.U.-constellations (or group of constellations) the Giant Arc is located. DannyCaes (talk) 22:13, 26 February 2022 (UTC)Reply

Confusing coordinates...

[edit]

The R.A. of the Giant Arc's celestial coordinates looks a bit confusing. Is it 12h or 21h? 212h 0m 0s, +37° 0′ 0″ DannyCaes (talk) 19:19, 24 April 2022 (UTC)Reply

@DannyCaes and PianoDan: PDan, you added the sky coordinates a few years ago. I'm not an astronomer, but it appears right ascension can't be higher than 24h. Were you entering degrees by any chance (212°?), or maybe mistyped the coordinates into the template? Hoof Hearted (talk) 18:00, 6 May 2025 (UTC)Reply
Is the name "Giant Arc" unique? NASA.gov is listing "Giant Arc in Galaxy Cluster IDCS J1426.5+3508", within the constellation Boötes, at 14h 25m 59.99s, 35° 7′ 59.99″. Is this the right object, and a reliable source? Hoof Hearted (talk) 18:38, 6 May 2025 (UTC)Reply
Look like the "sky" coordinate template defaults to using hours for right ascencion, and the original article used degrees, and I didn't notice. :) This is indeed the same object - I'll add a link to the Xarchiv original paper to the article and update the coordinates.
Also worth noting is that for anything this big, coordinates are obvviously an approximate location of the centroid, rather than anything more precise. Thanks!
