Gewilio Mainz

[edit]

There is a generation missing from this. Geroldus is his grandfather. His father was Gewillieb of Mainz, who was killed in 743 fighting the Saxons. All three of them were Bishops and passed the Bishopric to their sons. Gewilio became the bishop when his father was killed in 743. He only served until 745 when he was deposed by Boniface who was adamently opposed to the practice of passing the Bishopric to one's son. Gerilio died in Sponheim in 758 (not his father). Tne grandfather is named Gerold de Mayence, Bishop of Mayence.
