[edit]Update: corrections and additions (BLP/NPOV/V)
[edit]I have rewritten this article. Summary of changes and reasoning:
Corrections
- The guilty plea was in April 2006, not 2005. Source: SFO press release, 29 July 2022.[1]
- The statement that Smith sued Andy Ruhan in 2003 was inaccurate. The 2003 event was the transaction (Orb's sale of assets to companies controlled by Ruhan); the lawsuit was issued in October 2012 by Orb and two associates, and Smith was not a party to it, though the court later described him as having driven the litigation.[2]
Additions I have added sourced material on:
- the confiscation order and how the outstanding amount has grown with interest (£72m in 2021, £81.9m by October 2025);
- the 2012–2016 litigation between Orb and Ruhan, and the 2021–2024 findings arising from it;
- the July 2022 and December 2024 contempt of court findings;
- the September 2024 Covid bounce-back loan fraud conviction;
- the November 2024 Hotel Portfolio II v Marlborough Developments judgment, in which the court found Smith had colluded with Ruhan to frustrate a judgment against Ruhan;
- the 2023 findings regarding assets and companies connected to Gail Cochrane.
Sourcing Per the BLP sourcing guideline, I have prioritised independent secondary sources: SFO and CPS press releases, Jersey Evening Post, Bailiwick Express, LexisNexis Legal News, Law360, Mondaq and Enterprise Chambers. Court judgments (BAILII, judiciary.uk, Jersey Law) are cited alongside these for paragraph-level detail and direct quotations, not as the sole source for any contested claim.
I have deliberately left out: allegations from a case involving an unrelated "Gerald Roger Alan Smith" that I confirmed is a different individual; and press coverage I could not access directly to verify (paywalled or blocked sources).
If any statement goes beyond what its cited source supports, please flag it and I will correct or remove it. ~2026-51138-68 (talk) 09:41, 22 September 2026 (UTC) ~2026-51138-68 (talk) 09:41, 22 September 2026 (UTC)
