Misleading - Part of a series on European ranks

This is misleading or simply wrong. Landed gentry is a part of the series, but not gentry in general, in the same way Upper class, Bildungsbürgertum is not. Moving Part of a series on European... ranks in Western culture to Landed gentry. Doctoral historian (talk) 12:43, 11 May 2020 (UTC)

Gentry is not a title (Royal and noble ranks), as Aristocracy -moved to landed gentry i.e. people of good social position, specifically the class of people next below the nobility in position and birth.Doctoral historian (talk) 17:04, 19 May 2020 (UTC)

It's hard to see what you are trying to say, but Landed gentry in Britain is not a "rank" in any meaningful sense. It does not mean "people of good social position, specifically the class of people next below the nobility in position and birth", it means people who owned a lot of agricultural land, and lived off the proceeds. Esquire

There's this sentence:

' Esquire (abbreviated Esq.) is a term derived from the French "écuyer" '

But the word "écuyer" is modern French, there correct word here would be "escuier" in Old French

"Escuier" became "Esquire" in Middle English, & became "Squire" in Modern English.

"Escuier" became "Escuyer" in Middle French, & became "Écuyer" in Modern French.

If no one has a problem with it I'll change it to "Escuier" in a few days.

800 AD instead of 800 BC

Where the article says "800 BC", that does not make sense. I think it should read "800 AD". Compare with https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Church_and_state_in_medieval_Europe where "800 AD" appears on the page. Netpicker (talk) 02:16, 5 October 2025 (UTC)

The books.google.com page for the quotation reference doesn't include any bracketed text after "they ruled,". See https://books.google.com/books?id=suLI7RoaBEEC&pg=PA34#v=snippet&q=%22In%20the%20latter%20half%20of%20the%20period%20in%20which%20they%20ruled%22&f=false. There could be a good reason for the addition of the bracketed text. I don't know.
