@N2e FYA, since this is the standard discussion method for a contested move. Per my original WP:BOLD move, it is important to distinguish between lower reputation English sources such as the various blogs translating content from Ukrainian, and highly reputable secondary sources such as Reuters and Defense News, which have original English reporting. Per WP:COMMONNAME:

In determining which of several alternative names is most frequently used, it is useful to observe the usage of major international organizations, major English-language media outlets, quality encyclopedias, geographic name servers, major scientific bodies, and notable scientific journals.

Some of the major English-language media outlets that have reported on this air defence system are Reuters,1 Newsweek,2 Euronews,3 Foreign Policy Magazine,45 and Defense News.6 All five use the spelling 'Freyja'. Politico is the only major English-language media outlet that uses the spelling 'Freya', and they could have very well sourced the spelling from Wikipedia as an example of WP:CITOGENESIS (since they evidently didn't source it from Fire Point).

A cursory search suggests at least an equal number of Ukrainian secondary sources using the Freyja spelling as ones using the Freya spelling, but I'm willing to quantify the numbers if you require additional evidence.

I don't understand the opposition to referencing primary sources on the name, since the company and its manufacturing partners presumably know how they think the Ukrainian name should be spelled in English. This is not a case of a primary source being used for controversial claims such as missile performance or claims requiring interpretation, such as the usefulness of a missile system. Per WP:PRIMARY:

2. Any interpretation of primary source material requires a reliable secondary source for that interpretation. While a primary source is generally the best source for its own contents, even over a summary of the primary source elsewhere, [emphasis mine] do not put undue weight on its contents.

3. A primary source may be used on Wikipedia only to make straightforward, descriptive statements of facts that can be verified by any educated person with access to the primary source but without further, specialized knowledge.

Anyone can go to the websites of Fire Point and Hendsoldt and read the descriptive English name they use for the system they are working on. No specialized knowledge or interpretation needed.TROPtastic (talk) 02:05, 9 August 2026 (UTC)

Article title

I undid a recent WP:BOLD article move that was done on 27 July without discussion; per WP:BRD. Let's discuss it here.

Most of the English language secondary sources use the spelling 'Freya', while two primary sources use the Ukrainian transliteration 'Freyja as well as one secondary source. This is the English Wikipedia, and per WP:COMMONNAME, it would seem that 'Freya' is the spelling to use for the article title. Moreover, 'Freya' was the spelling used when the article was initially created.

Let's discuss all angles, and develop a consensus for making a change, if one is to be made. Cheers. N2e (talk) 02:59, 4 August 2026 (UTC)
