Eaten Buttered.

[edit]

South Australian here. Couple of problems with this article: Finger buns are very much eaten unbuttered in SA and Victoria. They're commonly bought both buttered and unbuttered. I would argue the more contentious issue from people consuming them is whether or not the bun contains fruit as they're often offered as either plain (fruit-free) or with sultanas.

The other issue is that the article that references them being buttered as 'mandatory' is from a single interviewee at the beginning of the article. Not to put too fine a point on it, but that's not a solid basis for making a definitive statement about something so nuanced-- side note they're also not solely 'coconut' flavoured. Obviously this article needs to be expounded upon, but I'm just leaving this here until I (or someone else) am able to contribute more later.
