In the 1950s and early 1960s 5CK Crystal Brook used the "experimental" FM broadcast as backup programme source for its physical line. The PMG was in a cleft stick: they were obliged to discontinue the (beloved of HiFi enthusiasts) FM service but needed a reliable 5CK, which serviced the whole mid-north. The solution, worthy of Gilbert and Sullivan or Monty Python, was to scramble the audio with a pair of locally-engineered frequency inversion boxes.
