F stars aren't yellow at all

Nor even yellow-white. They're white, as are G stars.

These aren't even the true (actual apparent) colours, but the conventional ones. G-type stars are yellow-white, not yellow, and F-type stars are white, with A-type stars being blue-white. See stellar classification article. --81.84.174.249 (talk) 14:06, 20 May 2015 (UTC)Reply

Correct me if I read it wrong, but I believe the statement above is the result of some misconception about what the 6500K figure really means. 6500K is more like the approximate color temperature of average daylight, that is, roughly the color of the sun and the sky combined, and that's how the standard illuminant D65 was derived (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Standard_illuminant), which is used in SRGB. It's not meant to be 100% accurate, just good-enough accurate (which is OK, given we're working with a very limited color space, compared to what we can actually perceive, and that we can't guarantee that the color of the daylight will always stay at exactly 6500K). So, if your white balance is at around D65, of course you'll find 6500K to represent pure white (simply because your color system is white-balanced to do just that), and a 5800K object like the Sun would look relatively very slightly pinkish or yellowish (and I'd argue that it still looks pure, or near-pure white, at noon). But still, in the absence of atmosphere, D65 doesn't seem to make much sense, because your average daylight would only consist of direct sunlight, and you'd then probably want your white point to be at around 5800K. Hence, I believe it's technically wrong to say that 6500K is pure white without the context of stars (or any context), because that figure was derived from very specific (seemingly average) conditions (sun and blue sky color combined), and it would look bluish in other (equally valid) contexts (say, in space without atmosphere). Color temperature is just too complicated thanks to our eyes adjusting the white point to some extent, I guess. ~2026-41576-23 (talk) 08:27, 27 July 2026 (UTC)Reply

Actually, when viewed from space, a G-type or F-type star (Teff = ~5500 K) is pure white to possibly even blue-white. Jtadesse (talk) 15:27, 5 December 2023 (Pacific time)
