Rate Attribute Review Comment
1. Well-written:
1a. the prose is clear, concise, and understandable to an appropriately broad audience; spelling and grammar are correct. Very easy read. I found it very interesting.
1b. it complies with the Manual of Style guidelines for lead sections, layout, words to watch, fiction, and list incorporation. Well-organised.
2. Verifiable with no original research, as shown by a source spot-check:
2a. it contains a list of all references (sources of information), presented in accordance with the layout style guideline. Four sources, and two further reading. I was only able to check one of the sources (The Punch) directly, as Izu was down online, and Egharevba is only available from Internet Archive for borrowers with reading disabilities. AGF applies.
2b. reliable sources are cited inline. All content that could reasonably be challenged, except for plot summaries and that which summarizes cited content elsewhere in the article, must be cited no later than the end of the paragraph (or line if the content is not in prose). Uses sfn for cites. Also gives extensive quotations from the source for most of the cites, which increases confidence in AGF.
2c. it contains no original research. Well-sourced. No sign of original research or synthesis.
2d. it contains no copyright violations or plagiarism. Earwig gives a 4.8% chance, and that is from reproducing the title of an article used in a citation.
3. Broad in its coverage:
3a. it addresses the main aspects of the topic. Comprehensive bio of the subject.
3b. it stays focused on the topic without going into unnecessary detail (see summary style). Summary style met.
4. Neutral: it represents viewpoints fairly and without editorial bias, giving due weight to each. Straightforward summary of the subject's disputes with some other leaders in his community, without picking sides. Recounts how subject gradually expanded his authority against other members of the community who traditionally held greater power. Subject appears to have been a long-term, strategic politician/thinker, but that is supported by the sources.
5. Stable: it does not change significantly from day to day because of an ongoing edit war or content dispute. Some edits from other editors from time to time, but no sign of edit-warring or significant disagreement on how the article treats the subject.
6. Illustrated, if possible, by media such as images, video, or audio:
6a. media are tagged with their copyright statuses, and valid non-free use rationales are provided for non-free content. Only one picture, in Commons, with a Creative Commons Attribution-Share Alike 4.0 International licence.
6b. media are relevant to the topic, and have suitable captions. Only one picture, of the royal palace in Benin, which is relevant to the article.
7. Overall assessment. Meets Good Article criteria

Review done: meets GA criteria

[edit]

Will push the additional buttons tomorrow to change it from under review to GA; getting late in my time zone and I had a busy day, so off to bed. (I've screwed up the final buttons on a couple of reviews where I've been wide awake, so don't want to take a chance when I'm sleepy. :) ) I have a few stylistic comments as well, but nothing major; will post them on this Talk page tomorrow. @Mr Serjeant Buzfuz thank you for finding the article interesting. If you’re unsure of any button don’t hesitate to ping me. Vanderwaalforces (talk) 05:17, 17 May 2026 (UTC)Reply
Done! (I think. Did I miss anything?) Mr Serjeant Buzfuz (talk) 15:16, 17 May 2026 (UTC)Reply
Great! Perhaps, you’re getting even better at it :p
I’ll tend to your comments later on PC (I’m so bad at using mobile editing, I’ve struggled for a long time, haha). Vanderwaalforces (talk) 17:01, 17 May 2026 (UTC)Reply
Just realised I missed the last step: Adding Ewedo to the list of Good Articles on the main GA page! (where's the face slap smiley when you need it?!?). Have now done that. Mr Serjeant Buzfuz (talk) 12:23, 22 May 2026 (UTC)Reply
I put Ewedo in the "Royalty and Nobility" section of "Royalty, nobility, and heraldry", but I wonder if he fits better in the "Monarchs" section? What do you think? Mr Serjeant Buzfuz (talk) 12:52, 22 May 2026 (UTC)Reply
@Mr Serjeant Buzfuz yeah, it should be in Monarch. Vanderwaalforces (talk) 13:12, 22 May 2026 (UTC)Reply

Some follow-up comments

[edit]

I had a few follow-up comments that did not go to the GA asessesment;

  • Early life and coronation -- paragraph beginning "As the only son..." : I was a bit puzzled by this wording:
"he had become concerned about the authority of the Uzama Nihinron ("kingmakers"), whose influence rivalled that of the Oba. To reduce their power, he moved the royal seat from Usama, which was close to the Uzama Nihinron..."
The first reference to the Uzama Nihinron is to a group, but the second reference is to a location. Did they live as a group at Usama? (Wording made me think of the College of Cardinals meeting at the Sistine Chapel...)
  • Picture of the Royal Palace -- doen't have an "alt" caption. That would improve the article for readers using an assisted reading gizmo.
  • Battle of Ekiokpagha -- 1st paragraph : I was puzzled by the reference to "six shillings and sixpence". That wouldn't have been contemporary with Ewedo, centuries before the British occupation of Benin, would it? Was it at the time of the 4th edition of Egharevba in 1968, just before British decimalisation? How did he make that calculation for a monetary value from seven centuries earlier? Is the "six and six" formulation just a customary formulation?
  • Same paragraph: "...forcing Ogiamwen to withdraw to his own quarter" -- is this quarter or quarters? I wasn't sure if it was referring to a quarter [area] of the town, or to Ogiamwen's residence or headquarters?
  • Battle of Ekiokpagha -- 2nd paragraph : I would consider moving the sentence "From that time onward..." to the end of the paragraph. I think that would make the chronology flow better.
  • Battle of Ekiokpagha -- 2nd paragraph : "Ewedo took possession of the Ogiso's royal stool" -- please excuse my ignorance, but is the royal stool equivalent to a throne? An explanatory footnote might be helpful here for some readers.

That's all. Hope you find this helpful. Mr Serjeant Buzfuz (talk) 15:52, 17 May 2026 (UTC)Reply

@Mr Serjeant Buzfuz
  • Yeah, Usama is a place where the palace was before it was moved to the current site. The Uzama Nihinron is a group.
  • Alt added, thanks!
  • I really do not know the answer to this question, but I removed the sixpense thingy entirely.
  • Quarter is exactly what the source say, which I could interpret to be his residence, but that wasn't mentioned or expatiated in the source.
  • Moved, thanks.
  • No, it isn't a throne. From what I have read, it seems to be something Eresoyen-like stool File:Nigeria, bini, ripiano del regno del benin, ferro 01.JPG.
Thank you once again, Mr SB. Vanderwaalforces (talk) 19:21, 17 May 2026 (UTC)Reply
