Estrogen name/classification
[edit]Regarding my edit to the estrogen page that you reverted, the plural is correct and you can see this here at Johns Hopkins:
https://www.hopkinsmedicine.org/health/conditions-and-diseases/estrogens-effects-on-the-female-body
The other hormones follow the same pattern in other Wikipedia articles. When a molecule has a name, that is the title and path of the page. When molecules are classified into groups that are named, the title of the page matches the name of the class and the plural is used to refer to the group of molecules.
Please explain why you chose to revert my edit, and review my related edits to androgen and progestogen articles ForestMade (talk) 00:40, 11 January 2022 (UTC)

Estrogen vs. Estrogens
[edit]The article defines estrogen as being a "category" of sex hormone, so the sentences where estrogen is plural, like "Estrogens are synthesized in all vertebrates", make sense, as that refers to all the members in the estrogen category. That's how it's used in the first two sections.
However, in the Biological Function section, it begins to be used as a singular uncountable noun, in the same way as "sand" or "estradiol". For example: "The actions of estrogen are mediated by the estrogen receptor (ER)" or "Since estrogen enters all cells, its actions are dependent on the presence of the ER in the cell."
I came to the Wikipedia article specifically to get clarification about why "estrogen" is often used this way, but the article doesn't explain the switching. When used as an uncountable noun, is it a synonym for specifically estradiol, the main estrogen? Or does it encompass all estrogens as once? It it's the latter, I would think it'd make more sense to use the plural form (e.g. Since estrogens enter all cells").
So this is just a suggestion to add an explanation for the other usage of "estrogen". Astrotamo (talk) 14:37, 12 August 2026 (UTC)
