Notorious

At the entry "notorius" the Online Oxford English Dictionary says "With neutral or favourable connotations. … With depreciative or unfavourable connotations. … In some cases it is not possible to ascertain the writer's intent. Some milder quotations may belong at sense [(1)]. … Of a reprehensible action, fact, etc.: noted or well known for its egregiousness; flagrant. … Well known on account of something which is not generally approved of or admired; unfavourably known; noted for some bad practice, quality, etc."

For three centuries, or more, European settlers in North America, or their descendents, have vilified Native Americans and the actions they took to defend themselves. Therefore, using the word "notorious" to describe Estanislao, leaves the reader with the clear option to take the meaning in the negative sense. I replaced it with "famous for" which is neutral in this context. Nick Beeson (talk) 12:45, 2 November 2019 (UTC)Reply
