Article expansion

[edit]

@Encoded: please could you assist me with expanding the article as I am unsure with the best course of action.ChefBear01 (talk) 18:11, 11 July 2025 (UTC)Reply

Hi @ChefBear01, I'd suggest expanding the history section (anything notable between 1636 - 1900s? why did it cease production?) and the dispute section (was there any outcome?). I'm currently working through a request backlog in the short time I have on here at the moment so I may be unable to help write content, but I'm happy to read over / review any changes you'd like to propose if you ping me in them! Hope this helps, Encoded  Talk 💬 00:16, 13 July 2025 (UTC)Reply

Definition (GI)

[edit]

I have made additions/changes to ensure that each step of the process is clearly arranged and defined from start to finish:
1. ingredients
2. wash (milled and fermentation)
3. distillation
4. maturation
5. bottling ChefBear01 (talk) 08:58, 13 July 2025 (UTC)Reply

Differences

[edit]

The more information that comes out, particularly in the most recent article from the Law Society of Scotland, the more distinctions I can see from the traditional definition of single malt.

English whisky
• Grains & water from UK
• Milled & Fermented in England
• Batch distilled in pot stills with sufficient copper contact at a single distillery in England to a strength of less than 94.8% ABV
• Matured in wooden casks of no more than 700l for at least three years
• Bottled at a minimum of 40% ABV
• No sweeteners or additives except E150 caramel colouring

Traditional
No specific grain sourcing requirements
• Milled & Fermented at the distillery
• Batch distilled in copper pots at a single distillery to a strength of less than 94.8% ABV
• Matured in oak casks of no more than 700l for a min of three years
• Bottled at a minimum of 40% ABV
• No sweeteners or additives except E150A caramel colouring traditional colouring

(Underlined - differences)

I believe more distinctions are incoming.ChefBear01 (talk) 21:55, 17 July 2026 (UTC)Reply
