[edit]The stress is initial and, since Yorkshire people aren't rhotic, there's no final R, least of all a flapped one! I wonder if the middle syllable is pronounced by all local speakers? Might the final vowel actually be a schwa?
- I agree, the pronunciation in the audio file is completely wrong. Having lived in Sheffield for the last 7 years, I would say the local pronunciation is something like /ˈɛlsᵻkə/. BigDom (talk) 10:46, 6 July 2017 (UTC)
- I added the local pronunciation of Elsecar on to this article last year because as you've both said, the final vowel is a schwa [ə] (I've always pronounced it that way since I'm from Sheffield originally) and the only times I've heard a final ɑː being used is by speakers of RP or some Southern English accents. Regarding the inclusion of [r] in the transcription (which is phonetically an approximant [ɹ] but is transcribed with the trill symbol [r] for convenience), Wikipedia uses this in most articles to ensure consistency for both rhotic and non rhotic speakers (see MOS:RHOTIC) even though non rhotic speakers will read and pronounce the final [ər] as [ə] - for example its still listed in the IPA transcriptions for e.g. Derby, Oxford, and we have to remember there are rhotic accents in the UK (e.g. Scotland, West Country & parts of Lancashire) even if they are fewer compared to non-rhotic accents. However, I imagine there will be some editors who won't follow the guidelines in MOS:RHOTIC. Broman178 (talk) 06:59, 15 November 2020 (UTC)
