Nephew?

Tenison is often called "nephew" to Thomas Tenison, but that would refer to nephew-by-marriage, and would mislead modern readers. Charles Matthews (talk) 12:29, 9 January 2012 (UTC)Reply

It appears the the word cousin (cozen) was often used to describe a near relative. For example this is a line from John Tenison's will (father of Thomas Tenison): To my cozen Edward Tenison, son of my brother Doctor [Philip] Tenison. Obviously today the relationship would be uncle to nephew.^[1] In his will John Tenison is probably referring to Edward Tenison of Lambeth who died unmarried in 1714 (he was uncle of Edward Tenison of Ossory).
