Mythological misinterpretation

[edit]

All information I've discerned is that "edimmu" is not a unique malevolent entity in Mesopotamian folklore, but simply a variation of the term for a ghost (See Ghosts in Mesopotamian religions). This article's sole reference is viewable on Project Gutenberg (https://www.gutenberg.org/ebooks/2069). The entire relevant portion is as follows:

The /êdimmu/. This is generally, but wrongly, read /êkimmu/, and translated "the seizer," from /êkemu/, "to seize." In reality, however, it was an ordinary spirit, and the word is used for the wraiths of the departed. The "evil /êdimmu/" was apparently regarded as attacking the middle part of a man.

This does not support any of the other claims in the article. Other versions of the article in other languages are also uncited: the Turkish article only adds a medical article (https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/4/) as a citation for their use in The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt.
