NPOV concern: wording in hyperandrogenism section

[edit]

I’m concerned this sentence is not neutral as written:

"The process of determining Chand's eligibility to compete with women caused her significant suffering, including invasive medical examinations and humiliating public scrutiny."

Reason: "significant suffering" and "humiliating" are value judgements, unless clearly attributed in-text to a reliable source or to Chand herself.

Per WP:NPOV and MOS guidance on loaded/value-laden wording, I suggest attribution-based phrasing. Could someone with access to Pape (2019) provide exact page number(s) and, if possible, a short supporting quote?

A rewrite might look something like this:

"According to [reliable source], Chand said the eligibility process involved medical examinations and public scrutiny, which she described as distressing."

Open to better wording if others prefer.

@Alaska_Jack I've checked the source and it is actually directly referencing Court Of Arbitration For Sport (CAS) 2015 case involving Dutee Chand. The quotation on question is on page 108.

"The Athlete described how she was subjected to a "humiliating" examination by a male doctor, who asked intrusive questions about her body hair, menstrual cycle, surgical history and her hobbies. Several doctors carried out physical examinations of the Athlete body, including on her genital area. The Athlete said she felt vulnerable and did not feel that she had any choice in relation to the testing." "She described the severe distress she experienced as a result of the ensuing media speculation about her gender, which humiliated and "shamed' the Athlete and her family. The Athlete said that she felt abandoned, insecure and helpless."[1]

Going directly off her words it seems like a pretty good summary of her experiences, so I personally don't see any WP:NPOV issues here.

@Sleepytimecat Thank you for your thoughtful response! Especially for checking the source and providing the CAS passage. I agree the underlying material appears supported. My remaining concern is phrasing in Wikipedia’s voice. I suggest attribution-based wording so readers can clearly see these are (well-sourced!) claims about her reported experience, not Wikipedia asserting the characterization in its own voice. What do you think of this?
====================
In CAS proceedings, Chand said she was subjected to intrusive questioning and physical examinations, including genital examinations, and that subsequent media speculation caused her severe distress and humiliation.[2] Pape summarizes this process as one that left Chand feeling vulnerable and without meaningful choice.[3]

@Alaska Jack

Yeah, that'd work pretty well, but I'd probably phrase it as "Chand said she was subjected to intrusive questioning and physical examinations that she found humiliating." Since the wording was specifically in reference to the medical exam she was subject to. Sleepytimecat (talk) 20:33, 7 February 2026 (UTC)Reply

Personal life

[edit]

It is mentioned in the article that she is openly bisexual, but none of the article have that label. Per the articles, she only came out saying she is in a relationship with a girl. Can it just say openly queer and in relationship with a girl?

how many sisters does she have?

[edit]

[4] says she has five sisters.

[5] says she has three sisters.
