Change the name
[edit]This is so stupid that I have to even post this on the talk page. Reminds me of the retarded POV-pushing editors that refused to change the name on the Islamic State article for like 7 years. Die Heimat/Die Heimat (political party) with or without disambiguation. Fix. It. Donenne (talk) 16:00, 22 December 2025 (UTC) —

- @Donenne I highly doubt that anybody will listen to you with that kind of language. Jon698 (talk) 16:24, 22 December 2025 (UTC)
- Has anything changed since the last discussion? Article titles are determined by WP:COMMONNAME. Vacant0 (talk • contribs) 20:21, 22 December 2025 (UTC)
I'm so glad you enquired! As a matter of fact, it never actually changed because Die Heimat has always been used more frequently than the older name. I ran a search engine analytic using date range parameters (The name Die Heimat only came into existence in 2023 therefore results were from 01 Jan 2023 - present) and the results were surprisingly unsurprising.> Die Heimat 55,600,000 results>National Democratic Party of Germany 19,400,000 results>The Homeland (political party) 7,940,000 results>Nationaldemokratische Partei Deutschlands 2,370 results
I then did another search this time with speech marks for more accuracy and to prove once again WP:COMMONNAME. The previous entries not recorded below returned so little results that I didn't bother listing them.
>"Die Heimat" 3,240,000 results>"National Democratic Party of Germany" 2,820 resultsI then decided to finally do the same above search but instead of getting results from the general search browser function, I used the news search function for more granularity.>"Die Heimat" 1,460,000 results>"National Democratic Party of Germany" 1,900 resultsI tend to be pretty WP:CIVIL up until I see either incompetence or WP:POV manipulate/mislead articles and I have 0 patience or tolerance for bots who hide behind language as an excuse to stymie article progress when this article should have had its name changed more than 2 years ago. I have more than demonstrated WP:COMMONNAME nearly 2 years after this fact. Like I said before, fix. it. Donenne (talk) 03:38, 23 December 2025 (UTC)—

Update - To further throw much deserved salt into the wounds, I have run another analytic. This time I used the quotation marks so that only the phrase 'The Homeland' is picked up in its entirety. Next, I added 'Germany' in the advanced search for another layer of precision as now only the term 'The Homeland' associated with the word 'Germany' will yield results. Results are for general search function and news function.> "The Homeland" (Germany) 2,030,000 results> "The Homeland" (Germany) 9,560 resultsTo absolutely no ones surprise, it is still higher than the current article title. Amazing. This means recommended name change to either The Homeland as the most commonly used English name or Die Heimat as the most commonly used name to refer to this political party. - Your clear lack of civility is not going to get you anywhere. You are not allowed to strikethrough other users comments. Plenty of articles still refer to it using its old name 1, 2, 3, and others. The party had that name for 59 years and during the entire time of its electoral relevance. Your Google search results are also improperly skewed because a large amount of those articles are not talking about the party, but are instead talking about "the homeland". Jon698 (talk) 06:43, 23 December 2025 (UTC)
- You can create the same misleading Google results for "Twitter" and "X", but we still call it Twitter on Wikipedia. Jon698 (talk) 06:48, 23 December 2025 (UTC)

You demonstrate that same Wiki-pidity/tardation I was referencing to in the opening comment. Usually I don't engage with bots hence why I struckthrough your Wiki-otic comment above but you rightly pointed out that some of the results above were drawing from other articles not explicitly referencing the subject in question. Correct, a barn-star for you. I will illustrate further below why this page needs its name changed.>"Die Heimat" (party) or (Germany) 121,000 results>"Die Heimat" (party) or (Germany) 11,900 results>"The Homeland" (party) or (Germany) 478,000 results>| "The Homeland" (party) or (Germany) 36,400 resultsSame methodology above, first result is the general search function, the second is the news search function from the 01 Jan 2023 date range, the year the party changed its name. Used the term 'party' in addition to 'Germany' to help isolate the subject term even more. In all four results it shows higher results than the phrase 'National Democratic Party of Germany' returned in my initial analytic results above.Secondly, you quoted articles from WP:RS using the current article name. This is not only clasping at straws, it is irrelevant as I can also do this 1, 2, 3, 4 and to a much larger degree given I just showed the there are many more articles since 2023 that use the terms Heimat/Homeland over National Democratic Party of Germany/NPD. One of the articles you posted was from 2009 which is very Wiki-tarded of you as we are only discussing a name that came about in 2023 so it doesn't merit consideration, nice work though. The other articles you referenced completely absconded using the updated term and they are in the absolute minority. You probably found all two articles since 2023 that actually managed to omit the new term. You also state that the current term was used for 59 years. This is irrelevant as it is not the WP:COMMONNAME anymore. Finally, you can critique the results as much as you want, that they allow other articles which may slip through the cracks even with the inclusionary phrases (party/Germany) that I added. The current article name yielded just 2,820 and 1,900 results for both the wider search and news search function. There are more articles than that out of the tens of thousands of results above which would strictly talk about Die Heimat/The Homeland. Donenne (talk) 09:14, 23 December 2025 (UTC)—

- To be fair: the article in link 1 is referring to the party's ban process which happened under its old name, although it could've mentioned the new one it's hardly relevant for discussing this part of its history. Article 2 is literally from 2009. Article 3 should've mentioned the new name but didn't, you have a point there indeed.
- I agree that Donenne's search was very flawed, but to determine the common name one should indeed only look at references after the name change, taking into consideration both historical discussion, which will obviously use the old name, and the modern National Democratic Party of Germany (2023), was it approached like that in the last discussion? National Democratic Party of Germany → The Homeland (Germany)
Per WP:COMMONNAME - Die Heimat "The Homeland" 2,830 results v. NPD "National Democratic Party of Germany" 1,120 results. The results are from 01 Jan 2023 to ensure fairness as that was the year the name change took place therefore from then until now are the only years the proposed article name would have been used.Usage of the new name by WP: RELIABLE SOURCES - BBC, Financial Times, Reuters, New York Times, Der SiegelPer WP:ENGLISH - It being an English name in line with English-naming article conventions and in precedent with similar article names Third Way (Germany) and The Left (Germany).
Arguments to be discounted will be around WP:POV. In the case of this article, previous discussions have opposed renaming largely due to not wanting to be seen helping a 'neo-nazi group from rebranding', diffs for reference here and here. This has nothing to do with Wikipedia policy as a repository of knowledge and an impartial encyclopedia. Additional arguments to be discounted will be the usage of WP:RELIABLE SOURCES where the sources used in defence of the current article name predate 01 Jan 2023. - Oppose not only because all of the relevant party's actions occurred under the name National Democratic Party, it has contested a grand total of one national election under The Homeland name, but for the same reason we call it Twitter and not X. When I click on the link Die Heimat "The Homeland" 2,830 results, the very first news result here states "The case is to an extent symbolic, as the Nationalist Democratic Party of Germany (NPD), now known as "Die Heimat" (The Homeland)". The same is true for the second, third, fourth, fifth, and so on. Jon698 (talk) 07:14, 28 December 2025 (UTC)
- Something else to note is that three of your five examples include the "Die Heimat, formerly National Democratic Party of Germany" line (BBC, Reuters, NYT) while one references its then-name (Der Siegel) and one is unknown as I cannot view it due to a paywall (Financial Times). Jon698 (talk) 07:16, 28 December 2025 (UTC)
Comment - Your argument on how the party had a different name for most of its history and therefore must use the old name in perpetuity despite Wikipedia policy is unconvincing and merits very little consideration if any at all. If you wish to put forward Twitter v. X naming convention as an argument, the onus will be on you to demonstrate the cultural significance and widely recognised impact the current article name holds. Given I have just shown that since 2023, the amount of articles with the phrase 'National Democratic Party of Germany' is less so than the alternative proposed title with the added 'Die Heimat' phrase for additional granularity i.e so that the TV series 'Homeland' is not picked up in the results, I would say you are off to a rather poor start. Re: the sources and their use of the former article title, please show me a list of WP:RS dated post the exact date the name change took place in 2023 where the current title is used exclusively with no mention of 'The Homeland'/Die Heimat'. - @Donenne you have yet to show that The Homeland is a common name. If almost every article has to include "formerly the National Democratic Party of Germany" then it is not a common name. The name The Homeland is used by an irrelevant remnant of a political party. Jon698 (talk) 08:40, 28 December 2025 (UTC)
There are a plethora of sources which use the term 'Homeland/Die Heimat' and near 0 which solely use the term 'National Democratic Party of Germany' to explain the subject since the change in name. Where 'NPD', and 'National Democratic Party of Germany' are used, it is purely in an explanatory capacity used once if at all and not to refer to the subject. Demonstrate to the contrary by offering reliable sources which solely use the term 'National Democratic Party of Germany' to explain the subject since the name change in 2023 in order to maintain that the current article name is the WP:COMMONNAME. If you cannot do this or you offer the only 2 such sources on the web from non-RS, then you have no contention here. Donenne (talk) 09:15, 28 December 2025 (UTC)—

- @Donenne You are fundamentally incorrect. The top sources in the Google Search you listed and the sources you listed here use the "Die Heimat, formerly the National Democratic Party of Germany" phrasing. This means that Die Heimat/The Homeland is NOT the common name as the sources feel the need to list a far more recognizable name. Jon698 (talk) 09:29, 28 December 2025 (UTC)
Apologies, my silly little cognitively-impaired pet goldfish needed some attention so I couldn't respond to this immediately. It's a coincidence indeed but his name actually sounds the same as your username, it's just spelt differently! In any case, I am now able to attend to your reply, Jon. Allow me to list additional reliable sources for your perusal which omit the phrases 'NPD/National Democratic Party of Germany': The Guardian, Bloomberg, The Week, and The Times. As I am aware that some editors in this thread, who shall not be mentioned, may not be in a fortunate financial position to afford subscriptions to some of the cited sources above, I shall provide some additional context, free of charge:Die Heimat (The Homeland), an unabashedly right-wing extremist party, in a deal that Chrupalla is reported to have brokered...Die Heimat — or “The Homeland” — of being a threat to Germany's democratic order. “When dealing with the AfD, we should look very carefully at what is...The Federal Constitutional Court in Germany stripped the neo-Nazi party Die Heimat, which means the Homeland, of the right to public financing and the tax advantages normally extended to political organizations
And just for you Jon, I will add an additional source from the International Center for Transitional Justice - ICTJ and if reading isn't your thing for whatever reason, I will add this little clip from Der Spiegel! I really do spoil you, Jon. So as a re-cap, Jon we have more search results now and multiple reliable sources omitting the term 'NPD' and 'National Democratic Party of Germany', opting instead of The Homeland/Die Heimat. More than enough to demonstrate WP:COMMONNAME. Still waiting on your reliable sources which make no mention of the Homeland/Die Heimat phrase (and were after the exact name change date in 2023), Jon. I am sure I will be receiving them very very soon and look forward to reading them :) I hope you stay safe over the New Years period and have a Happy New Years! National Democratic Party of Germany → Die Heimat – Since this party is now called Die Heimat, and the article explicitly states that, the article should be titled Die Heimat. Lijil (talk) 17:21, 5 May 2026 (UTC) — Relisting. Jeffrey34555 (talk) 18:42, 12 May 2026 (UTC)
I see this has been discussed before, and that the last discussion was closed due to its being started by a sockpuppet. Since I am not a sockpuppet and am not at all involved in editing this article I'll reopen the discussion. Since this party is now called Die Heimat, and the article explicitly states that, the article should be titled Die Heimat.
I see two options: 1. Rename this article to Die Heimat and leave the rest as is. 2. Rename this article to Die Heimat and create a disambiguation page that is titled National Democratic Party of Germany that has a link to both this page and to National Democratic Party of Germany (2023). Lijil (talk) 07:36, 4 May 2026 (UTC)
- Support I have noticed the differing in names used on the article header v. the infobox and after reading through the discussions above (what a crazy read) regarding the title, it does appear as if the common name used in recent reliable english-language sources does correspond to the proposed change to Die Heimat post the name change in 2023 and funding restriction event in 2024. This seems to align well with the Recognizability/Conciseness/Precision criteria in WP:AT so I would support the move. Tony Hainsworth (talk) 03:42, 5 May 2026 (UTC)

*@Jeffrey34555: Can you move the article back to National Democratic Party of Germany? This was a completely inadequate move discussion. Only two people participated and none of the people involved in previous discussions were alerted to this. Jon698 (talk) 01:14, 15 May 2026 (UTC)

opposefrom the previous discussion: not only because all of the relevant party's actions occurred under the name National Democratic Party, it has contested a grand total of one national election under The Homeland name, but for the same reason we call it Twitter and not X. Some sourced have used the current name of the party, but they usually qualify it as "previously known as the National Democratic Party" as that is what everybody knows them from. - Comment I feel that sources which use 'Die Heimat'/'The Homeland' but also follow up with 'NPD'/'National Democratic Party' as a disambiguation don't really argue the point in favour of maintaining the current article name any more than they do for the article to be renamed. I don't believe anyone is arguing to remove all references of the terms 'NPD' or 'National Democratic Party' from the article body, just the name. What made me supportive of the name change were the reliable sources cited in the previous discussion which solely used 'Die Heimat'/'The Homeland'. I would consider altering my position if reliable sources could be found post the name change date in June 2023 which omitted the term 'Die Heimat/'The Homeland' entirely in favour of using the current article title. Tony Hainsworth (talk) 03:24, 15 May 2026 (UTC)
- Comment I agree with Tony Hainsworth - if most recent sources primarily used NDP or didn't mention 'Die Heimat' at all that would convince me to change my vote. A recent article does say that Die Heimat might be collapsing (but I can't see other confirmation of this) and if it were to collapse, it might make sense to have the name that was used for the most years as the article title. Lijil (talk) 12:11, 15 May 2026 (UTC)
...for the same reason we call it Twitter and not X.
We don't! -- Necrothesp (talk) 14:04, 15 May 2026 (UTC)- I was unaware of the move made for X (social network) until now. At the time of the previous discussion it was still Twitter. I am now neutral on the name change for NDP/Die Heimat. Jon698 (talk) 14:47, 15 May 2026 (UTC)
- So we currently have three votes (nom + two supports) to move to Die Heimat, and one neutral vote, right? Lijil (talk) 14:26, 19 May 2026 (UTC)
- I was unaware of the move made for X (social network) until now. At the time of the previous discussion it was still Twitter. I am now neutral on the name change for NDP/Die Heimat. Jon698 (talk) 14:47, 15 May 2026 (UTC)
- A shame I was not here for this discussion. My previous points stand, we should not be kowtowing to the whims of a neo-Nazi party seeking a change in perception. Curbon7 (talk) 21:13, 2 June 2026 (UTC)
