Devil's advocate

[edit]

Does this term originate from the phrase "Devil's advocate"? 66.93.12.67 15:06, 6 April 2006 (UTC)Reply

No, that term comes from the fact that whenever the Catholic church wished to canonise a saint, they would appoint an advocate in the proceedings to speak against the canonisation, on behalf of the devil, and therefore devil's advocate. Dermo345

It would be nice to have some indication of the origin of the term. Is deviling considered evil for some reason? Darmot and gilad (talk) 13:51, 24 March 2014 (UTC)Reply

There seems to be an interesting reference here -- does anyone have a subscription? Cusop Dingle (talk) 16:46, 22 October 2011 (UTC)Reply
