Supercharger

The engine's description incorrectly refers to the scavenging (Roots) blower as a “supercharger.” No Detroit Diesel engine has a supercharger. As the Detroit Diesel engine is a two-stroke unit and is incapable of self-aspiration, a mechanically-driven blower is required to charge the cylinders with air for combustion, as well as scavenge spent gases. That process is not supercharging.

The blower fitted to Detroit Diesel engines is carefully matched to the engine's displacement so a slight positive pressure is always present in the air box(es). The purpose of that is to prevent any combustion products from getting into the fresh air side of the engine.
